Hey everybody,
I needs some more advice, you all have been so helpfull.
I was looking for the ignition module on my 031 "which I still have not located after romoving the top cover, carb, carb box;everthing but the gas tank half." and saw that I have 2 fins broke off the flywheel, both i the same spot. does this affect performance/effect longevity of the saw? thanks for all advice

Could you explain why the broken fins hurt the saw. Bye the way it is an electronic model. I finally found the module.

sound like a good reason, these things must be picky when it comes to balance. thanks a lot. and good way to remove the flywheel without the special puller

Remember that these things are spinning at 200+ revolutions per second. I have a Stihl puller but you can put the nut back on the shaft and give the nut a swift smack with a brass hammer and knock it loose. Be VERY careful when doing this though because you can do damage if you just start swinging away.

update: I removed the gastank to get a better look at the flywheel. There are a total of 4 fins broke. 2 fins at each spot, both spots exactly the same place, at 360 degrees apart. they are the 2 fins just before the coil pickup area. Has someone done this purposly for performance enhancement? Would you still recamend replacing the flywheel even though I think it would still be perfectly balanced being that they are broke in exactly the same spot 360 of each other. What is the purpose of the fins, to cool the cylinder/coil?

I wouldn't run with it. I'd get a new flywheel. I'm a helicopter mechanic, and work alot with turbines, and I can tell you that dynamic inbalance is your enemy, especially at those rpm's. It may not come to catastrophic failure and grenade itself in your hand, but vibes like this, even though small will wreak havoc on rotating components and their carriers. It may seem small, but it's all math and physics how a fraction of an ounce static will be like four pounds or something like that at 12,000 rpm. Talk to klickitatsacket...he's probably got a flywheel for you.

Take care all,
Jeff

I assume you mean 180 degrees as it is impossible to have two items 360 degress apart. One complete revolution is 360 degrees.

Probably someone accidentally broke two fins in one spot and then broke the other two opposite that spot on purpose, in an attempt to restore balance.

If you need to find an eletronic compenent, follow the wire...
I would run this saw, and have in mind that it can not be as cool as before ;)
I have two 031's both with pionts.

it is a good idea not to run it long like that. i would not. i sold off all my running 031's(idiot). i still have some part saws and parts. let me know what you need. marty

What would you want for a parts saw that has a good muffler and flywheel. I finally found my ignition module, it was mounted to the side of the coil just as someone stated before. thanks
