201 not starting hot

Well try a new Solenoid then it's cheap enough and good to have anyway.

am I right in saying that my non mtronic version does not have a solenoid valve?

You stated on 1st post you had ms201 “CM”
That tells us that is was a mtronic by your description of cm at end
But you have standard carb version. So it is a “ms201” only
No reset or solenoid on your saw.

Mine is the Top handle, M-Tronic model.

Because it's the Rear handle model, I don't think it would have same issue as the Top handles.

Vapor lock occurs when the carb gets hot enough to boil the fuel in it. It all depends on how close the carb is to the jug and how the overall airflow is across the cylinder. How much swarf do you have under the recoil cover? One thing I do is I blow my saws off every time I use them, especially under the recoil. Saw looks to be kind of filthy so I'm curious and e-gas mix tends to boil more easily. Only time my saws look like that is when I'm done using them, before they go back to the shop to get cleaned off with a blow gun and rags.

no worries- stihl loves different letters after model numbers to make it difficult
could still try "1" pull on choke and then choke off to fast idle setting for hot start issue and see if that helps

Too rich maybe? What are your H and Low needles on the carb set at? Try taking the air filter off when it won't start.

yes was going to take a small screwdriver along next time to reduce L. Would H have an impact on starting?

You still haven't told us what you are doing with the throttle. If you are trying to start it hot with the throttle closed and it won't start after 2 or 3 pulls, it isn't going to start until you open the throttle to at least the fast idle position with no choke.

YES!!! Setting the throttle to fast idle, no choke should be good enough. A hot saw will only start with the throttle closed if the high and low speed adjustments are correct and it depends on how long it has been shut off.

the H still has a limiter on and I set the L by ear. no markings as far as I can see, I have the workshop manual and I cannot see where it mentions recommended settings

Try 1 turn out on the Low. First, see where it is set now. . Is the H at the limiter stop

Is it as far open as the stop allows? Where is the L, count the turns in till lightly seated then make a note of that position, Im thinking it should be around 1 turn out CC.

H is about mid point and L at the sweet point by ear probably 720 degrees from closed

Try 360 degrees from closed and see what happens. That's the stock setting!
