so i took the 2100 apart...the good news..it appears to be a thin ring piston...tha bad news...piston has scrapes and grooves...really bad news...so do the edges of the transfers. appearantly, the saw was 'scar-ed' when i got it..but i took a chance-:bang: :bang: :bang: -sigh-...the smoke problem i had, i am certain was oil on the cykinder and muffler...anyways....i have no money for about a month and a broken 'project saw'. does anyone know where i can buy a 'cheap', good cylinder, or if there is another model cylinder 'kit' that will fit??? P.S. it still runs..what are the chances that shavings might have wound up in the case....? ( iwas gonna run till it went boom! but on second thought, bad idea....ha ha ha..been out of it for a while/finals at college) also, i forgot to mention that whever had looks to have used a grinder to shave off the bottom portion of the piston 'sleeves'. would this have been for more air flow? (who ever it was didn't do a very 'even' job...looks like a 'sine curve'...with a hill on the opposite side...(hope that explains if not im sorry, cant take pictures for another week...-sigh-) :bang: :bang: :bang:

No, you probably didn't get any shavings down inside. So it scuffed up, ignore everyone and sand it with 600 grit (the piston and the cyl). It wont last forever but it will buy you some time. I did it to my beater 2100 3 years ago and it still runs after quite a few hours of pure abuse. I took that saw free out of a trash pile and put 0 dollars into it (unless you count the JB weld and gasket sealer).

You will have a tough time finding another thin ring piston, yet alone any rings for one. I lucked out last year and picked up one for $75 from Dean.

These piston/cylinder kits will all fit your saw: 1100, 285, 298, 2100, and 2101 XP's and CD's. The bad news is that they will all cost you about the same 300 bucks new, which makes the 285 kit not worth it anyway.

I will bet your saw had the thin ring added to it. That piston has a longer skirt and sometimes you have to grind the bottom to clear the crank bell's.
