I am asking opinions cause I know the Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Datsun, Subaru thing is going to play a big part.
I was going to buy a 044 when my local dealer started trying to steer me to a 2171. They both list in my area for about $620. Jonsered is running a deal that you get $150 off a 2171 and a few other saws if you trade another saw in. My friend has a junk mac that he said he would give me. $470 for a 70+cc saw sounds good to me. However, I don't want to buy something that won't last or perform up to the level I'm used to. I have run only Stihls until lately. A few weeks ago the same dealer talked me into a 2150 for a limbing saw (after getting feed back from this site):) . He made the price right so I bought it. I modified the muffler and thus far really like the saw with a 16" bar for limbing. Once again I want opinions. How many of you own or have run 2171's. How do they compare to an 044 in performance, level of required maintenance, reliability etc.

I'd stack that 2171 up against an 044 anyday, and be smug about stomping the Stihl into the dirt. The 046 would be a better match.

the 2171 should be a great saw, i personally like stihl. the 044 is a work horse and you can get replacement parts from bailey's pretty cheap. the 2171 is basically the same saw as a husky 372xp, they use a lot of the same parts as i understand it:angel:

I wouldnt hesitate to take the 2171...I may be a biased jonsered guy...but for 150 bucks less??? who wouldnt be? The 2171 will take anything you throw at it and ask for more....if your dealer is good, and I presume he is, then you have absolutely no worries...I own 3 2171's myself...although, all but one are in pieces being turned into race saws...I love the feel and power of them...and yes, this is prolly a ford/chevy thing, but I find them WAY easier to work on (than a Stihl)..less labour intensive...and I can promise the maintenance will be the same on either saw with the exception of the air filter...the Jonny will win that one...

Come to the dark side Xander:D

I've run 044's and Husky 272's and both are great saws. considering the price difference withthe trade-in I'd grab the Jonsered and smile!:D

I have run both, but just on a testing basis. They are both good saws; the 2171 is probably slightly faster and smoother.

The 2171 24" is selling here for $585 with any junk trade-in. I don't know what 044s go for, but I talked to a fellow today that paid $519 for an 036. I hav not heard a any special deals on the pro Stihls around here.

My Dennis Greffard woods prepped 2171 is my favorite saw,
hand down. They are plenty powerful stock, but worked over
turns them into time and back savers, unbelievably fast. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. My two cents.

I've used them both the 2071 is smoother to run and will out cut the 44 , but for me its the 46, wouldn't have no other for that size.

i really like my 046 but did consider a 2171, just like the feel of a stihl better. i'd go with who ever has the best service:angel:

Here's a picture of my 2171 that Dennis built, its a very fast saw, and I like the heated handles and carb. Its easy to work on as is the 044. With regards to Stihl or Husky, some swear by them, some swear at them. I happen to like them all. Its snowing out here now!

It quit snowing, but it's 35 below here, Think I will just have a few beverages today and tell lies about chainsaws and timber at the Hotel.
