The 254 & 257 from 1994- 2001, the 261 from 1998-1999, and the 262 all have the same crankcase in common. Hopefully this will increase your chances in locating one.
I have tryed to place 262 cylinder on a 254, it fit the crankcace, but the cylinder was to high, so the hat did not fit.
The hat from the 262 did not fit at 254.
started it any way as it was without hat, so I did not run it much, but it was not running good anyway.
I gleened that information off of a Husqvarna Service CD. The only thing that I can think of is that the saw was outside the year of manufacture range.
I'd like to add a little something about these saws, The 254 had a shorter rod(same stroke) than the 262(prob why the combo didn't run well) and the cases also differ from one model to another, your best bet for a good fit to your 262 will be 257 or 261 built after 1994. I am pretty sure I have an extra case around if you didn't find one yet. I have 2 of the 262XP's and both will outcut any stock 372xp.
Both are ported and ofcoarse have port matched mufflers but keep in mind that the 262XP has a heavier clutch(more torque) than other saws of the 60cc range. I don't own anything with a combustion engine that is STOCK! LOL!
I enjoy running these saws because of the power to weight ratio and use the alot for tops and limbing. I have four 288XP's for my primary felling saws, they are said to have some bark as well.....
