Hi all
I have had a 27 ton champion log splitter for about 3 years, never a problem . Now every once in awhile it wants to "stall" . And kinda back fires. I will release the handle and it keeps running , like a champ. then a little latter it does it again. Any ideas of why ?? Bad gas.? thanks...

I would check the gas tank for water. I have had similar problems in the past with trash pumps. When the motor starts running rough, I drain the tank and replace with new gas and it usually cures the problem. If you catch the drained gas in a clear jar, you can usually see droplets of water floating around in the gas.

I had been going thru something similar with my splitter, which has a honda GVC 160, almost since I got it like 5 years ago or so. It would be worst when I was just getting it going in the spring. I'd clean the carb, run it a while & it would seem to clean itself out for the rest of the year. Each year I'd do that. Sometimes if it sat for a couple months during the year, it would do it all over again. Last year or year before I took the tank off & flushed it - it had dirt in it. Like, bits of wood kind of dirt. Thought I nailed it. This year, I didn't get it out for the year to get ready for splitting until about a month ago. Same performance. Cleaned the carb a couple times. Wouldn't come out of it. Finally just for craps & laughs I rummaged around and found a spark plug the right size (but not quite right heat range). Swapped that in, and it ran like a top.

So - don't rule out the spark plug, and swapping in a new one is easier to do than anything else. It acted exactly like carb/dirt issues - but it wasn't.

I had that problem with my splitter after a year of use. took bowl off the carb and cleaned it(lots of debri) sprayed carb cleaner up the main jet. that fixed it. had to do it again a year later. been 2 years now whithout a problem. not sure if mine has a filter in the tank, but it would be nice if it had a inline filter...not to hard to clean the bowl and main jet though. didnt have to remove the carb, just drop the bowl.
today as i added gas i noticed a kernel of corn went in my gas tank. not sure how the heck it got in my gas can. but seemed to run fine after. might need to get a funnel with a filter

There is a fuel filter in the gas tank. I will get a new one soon. And I will change the plug also, as it is still the original. Thank to all of you, who replied.
