Got our first 2 MS270s today. One for demo, the other is already a Xmas present.
The case is magnesium from the flywheel crank bearing to the barmount.
Flywheel housing is plastic and screws to the crankcase.
Cylinder (finger ported) screws to the crankcase with split at the bearings.
4 rubber buffers and 1 spring buffer.
Oil pump, plastic housing with pressed in pump. Housing screws to case.
No tools chain tensioner, beefier than smaller models.
One piece muffler, but not too hard to get apart and open up.
Adjustable carb with limiter caps.
Flywheel with integral key.

I have not cut with it yet (can't find the wood under the snow).
Started easily, no bogging right out of box. Instant revs like a good running 044. I think better than 026. Revs freely.
A pound more than an 026, but did not feel heavy. Perfect balance with 16 inch bar and chain.

Like I said , I think the pro and consumer saw line is going to get blurred. I have not seen which way Stihl has labeled it yet.

So it is made like the 029, but it is beefed up between the
engine to the bar mount? Do the same fasteners hold the
powerhead and the body together? It sounds like an 029 with
a few problem areas addressed. Is the bearing quality the same?

bearings

Not sure about the bearings, will check with Ben Crago Jan 21 at the update school.
The cap on the bottom is now the whole right side of the bottom end. Looks as good as any of the pro saws.
One bar stud with the quickadjust, 2 without.
Yes, self tapping fasteners throughout. The bolts hold the case to the cylinder, but nothing else. Fuel tank similar to a 260.
I hope they all rev as nicely as this one.
Definitely a different look, the starter covers most of the left side of the saw. Not a lot of parts used from the 290. Maybe the clutch.

Google's "language tools" will translate the German pages. The darn stihl.de site is awfully (technically) fancy, and google has a bit of trouble keeping in the translation mode.

This will get you right into their chainsaw page. The dropdown box to select a specific saw will drop you out of the translation mode, but if you follow the "Universal Saws" link you'll see they've got it listed with the 290/310/390 (for "around the house and yard" and the "annual firewood impact") as opposed to the "Medium strong professional saws" 200(not top handle, rather like the Husky 339 [which I'm sure is the imitator])/240/260/360 group.

This is the direct link to the translated MS270 data sheet page.

Their web designer, at least, is definitely classifying it as an "all-around" model; but that doesn't necessarily mean much as stihlusa.com lists the 036 amongst the "mid-range" saws too. Although it's in a sort of weird middle-size ground, we all know it (036) is a true professional-class tool and really should be listed with them instead (as it is on the stihl.de site, which perhaps lends credence to the 270 being where it is there...).

I guess I really don't have a point :)

My update school is the 22nd.

???? you will get the scoop a day earilier :D

update

Yeah, and we usually have a great guy that will answer anything. I rather enjoy going.
Cut with it today. 16 inch bar and .325 RM safety chain in frozem pine. Decent power out of the box, but could not crowd it too much. If let to cut on its own, no loss of power and speed of cut. Probably the RM chain.
Pulled it off rack, running in 2 pulls. Only a slight hesitation on the very first acceleration, then revved immediately. Smooth idle.
Way too quiet. Check out price of muffler tomorrow. Feels like it needs to breath.

Is the rear handle orange, black or white? Sounds like an improvement on the 029, although I'd expect it to be able to pull more than a 16" bar. For about the same price the 260 still sounds like a better deal.

treeclimber165,

If you'll follow the links in my previous post you can see for yourself. It's probably got all the power of the 026 but quieter, smoother, and cleaner - all at the expense of 1-1/3 pounds. I'm going to guess it's got a 5-piece crankshaft, for whatever that's worth.
