3?8 hole on a factory single port 044 muffler?

is the chainside port outlet the same on a stock 440 muffler as the side port on the stock dual port muffler? with a dual port facelate on a newer muffler, would one have to enlarge the side outlet?

Yes, the new "strangulator" mufflers have a tiny outlet.

If you do the ported casing, then enlarging the chain side outlet of the existing muffler a little could be done, but a downside is that if you open it too much the hot exhaust will not be directed forward by the deflector. This could put too much heat on the chain brake if the exhaust comes straight out to the side.

I am guessing that Preban is refering to mufflers before all the emmissions crap. I have an 044 that is 5 1/2 years old, and it had a tiny hole. I opened it back into the deflector mostly so that it would still blow mostly to the front. I can use it to blow leaves out of the garage, but the blower is a better option.

by PREBAN..i just used it sarcastically to describe the better breathing mufflers....and i wanted to skip the trial and error and get a free answer to the size of the side outlet on the old factory dual port when i get my front plate.....what's with the 1...2...3...??

my old 044's have an 5/8 inch outlet.



I enlarged the hole a little, as there is no room for more. Then I added a much larger front port. Together the area appx equals the cylinder exhaust port area.
