I've build up a 3 yr supply of firewood and still have lots of logs. I'm considering milling up a few. A beech and a cherry both < 15" diameter to start out. I have an 039 with a 20" bar. To start out I'm thinking of getting a 30" Alaskan Mill and rip chain. I realize I will need a much larger saw if I plan on doing anything serious. I'd like to fool around with an inexpensive setup like this before I spend big money on a big saw and bar. With a 30" mill I'd have room to grow into a bigger saw. Will a 30" mill adjust down enough to fit on my 20" bar?

My Alaskan will adjust down OK, but on a 20inch bar it would give only about a 10-12inch cut.
I would think a 24inch bar would work better.

Yes it will adjust down to fit your 20" bar. Probably gonna smoke your saw milling that hardwood though.

On a 20" bar you should be able to get 14 -16" of cut. You lose 4" on the end and whatever space the dogs take up.
