there have been several threads about AM P/C's for 346's and the like. here are some pics of a NE 45mm kit that i recently bought from an ebay seller. i actually bought two, but the other one had plating missing 2mm out from the port chamfers and it was returned.

the piston/cylinder were installed without a gasket and using the included circlips. the clips will probably be replaced with OEM when i open this saw back up for improvements, but they fit the groove well. squish was about .024". i don't remember taking a compression reading when it was new. i have run four tanks through it and i will try to get a reading. the saw began life as an OE model and the muffler was modded with a 288 deflector. i ran it side-by-side with a similar MM OEM NE saw (is running a gasket) and could not tell any power difference.

the I/E ports are symetrical, but there was a good bit of smoothing than can be done, and the chamfer on all ports can be improved. the plating is even and goes to the top of the cylinder. the divider on the lower transfers is WAY large. again, it needs some improvement. i have not done any grinding and won't do so until the warranty period is up. then it will get the full treatment.

these kits aren't perfect. i have seen much better AM P/C kits. but for half the money, and with some work, i think it might be a suitable alternative for those on a budget or looking to get a beater saw back to work

if you have questions, ask away.

Good data, nmurph.

Rough ports are easily fixed, but bad bores are not. Great to hear that the plating goes all the way up the bore.

What are the blobs on the squish band ?

Lots take a grinder to a new OEM jug,why not an AM one for 1/2 the price ??
AM makes sense to me..

Mine has the same thing, I believe it's where the cyl was sitting on a fixture during plating.

Mine looked very similar to that one, On mine the holes weren't drilled through all the fins so I couldn't even get the bolts in, I had to drill them myself. also the exhaust skirt on the piston had what looked like a saw blade cut in it. I cut it up to the point that the saw cut was gone which left about 1mm before free porting. The timing #'s on those cyls are pretty good but the port finishs need love. I didn't expect much for $100, it's about what the kit is worth, not terrible if your tolerant..

That cylinder looks decent for the price. If the plating holds up, I wouldn't have any problems running them. A little smoothing is not a big deal as I usually do some porting any way. Thatnks for the pics and your comparison on the performance to OE.

i just checked on the saw with this kit. it is blowing 162psi and the squish is a nice even .024" all the way around. compression may go up a little, but it is still nice as is. ported it will be even better!!!

Sounds like this stuff may be decent "raw material" for enthusiasts who don't mind correcting those faults. But for a guy who just wants to bolt it on and head to the woods, those imperfections make it an awful tough sell.
