We dont have a lot of real hardwoods out west, but my stock 346, which i've only run a bit, would be hard pressed to run well with a 20 inch bar. The modded one is a different story, but I still prefer to run it with a 16 inch bar. I bought an 18 for it, am expecting that length to be optimum for versatility anf good for speed. Now that i have a modded 357 by Ed Heard, I'm using the 346 less, but it is still one amazing saw..modded that is. (50% faster than stock!)

I have mine set up with a 16 inch............I'm happy with it and would not consider anything bigger

I have an 18" bar on mine. Seems about the right size for the wood I typically cut. However, this morning I noticed something a little strange about the saw.

After limbing about 20 minutes worth of 6-10" diameter, I began sawing a large trunk into blocks for firewood. As I continued cutting (top down to base) the saw actually cut faster even though it was bigger at the base. Like 8 inches or more. The wood was dry, but not dead. Anyone know why or was it just me getting into the "zone" with the saw and cutting at the perfect speed?

Oh, and by 8 inches or more I meant 8" diameter larger than the top of the log, which was about 8" or 10" itself.

sorry for the confusion, btw, where is a source I can find all the acronyms for tree experts?

My 346xp is strong with a 16", but does not do a good job with a 20" in hardwood. bob

Myself i use a 346 alot and even stock , the 16 inch bar to me fits the saw perfect, a longer bar in hardwood just heats the motor up to much for me even on a 357 i would use a 16 inch but would go to a 18 inch if i had to, if i need more bar length than that then i want more motor to drive it, this is in cutting hard maple not white pine

The 16 incher gets my vote of approval - I do not find that motor able to pull a bigger bar without doing too much work...:alien:
