What are the differences in the 372 and 371, Is the 371 as reliable as the 372 or should I stay away from it?

Sorry if this has been talked about allready, I tried a search but it would not work.

I have a 371 that I've had since about 98. It has been a workhorse, although the last few years it get run less as I got bigger saws.

The only thing that has gone wrong was early on the winged deal that drives off the clutch to work the oil pump was made out of too soft material or something and the tabs wore off that engaged the clutch. Simple replacement. They changed the material early on. At that time I bought a spare part as I always do, and I've never needed it after the first replacement.

ALways starts runs great.

both thre 371 and 372's had the large filter here in the US, unless it was the XPG model, then it had the smaller 365 style fitler.

371's and 372's both came with one ring pistons and two ring pistons...The one ring pistons were non epa and the two ringers were EPA versions...

Like Pest said, the biggest difference is the side chain tensioner and the semi transparent fuel tank. Both great saws. The newe side cover can be put on the older 371 to make more user friendly

Wasn't there something about 1-ring versus 2-ring pistons, too?

That change happened before the 371 became the 372, and not on all markets.......;)

The high air filter was/is an option, so it is probably up to the distributers if it is "standard" in your area.
