I just bought a 42" bar for my 372xp, I'll only use it in pine, and only if I need it. The saw usually has a 28". Do you think the saw will handle it ok?

I want to use it for carving, blocking out big carvings. I need to be able to plunge cut through big logs. I only do a couple pieces this size a year, and I was hoping to get by with my saw.

oh yea- I'm in NY, Big logs are 38" through.

I think it's already clear that a 42" on a 372 is a bad idea, but if you must press ahead with it, you either seriously hate yourself or the saw. At best it will be very slow cutting and hard on the saw. Your clutch won't like it much, and you won't like how slow it is. If this is for a couple cuts a month, maybe you could stand to tolerate it, but it certainly isn't a good combination for anything resembling even infrequent use. A 395 or 066 has to work to pull that much bar in the cutting you describe, let alone a 372.

In short, either get a bigger saw, or a shorter bar.

Even if the saw had the power to pull that bar and chain combo (modded), I dont think the AV mounts would handle it for very long, as was said before up top. IMO

I use my 372 occasionally with a 32" skip, but it's tough going in hardwood. I've even found it helps to grind the chains a little less aggressive to take some of the load off the saw.

In my opinion the 372 is best on 20", good with 24", and marginal as you go bigger (look to skip and go slow). I'm not saying it won't pull a bigger bar, but it's kinda like hauling bricks in a station wagon, not the best application for the equipment or the user!

Now the good news, given you have the bar, you have to get a saw to match it!
