I need a saw engine in the 40-50cc range that does not have the saw frame as part of the crankcase. Something that the complete engine can be removed from the saw. I would also prefer the mag coil be mounted to the engine and not the saw frame, but it is not required. This is for converting to RC airplane use so something strong and light is required. I am aware of the Poulan 42 and 46cc and Homelite 45cc and the Echo 44 and 50cc. I would like to know if there are any "pro" saws that meet the requirements. Thanks.

Look for a Echo blower PB400 i think. The motor just unbolts. There are some pics at my Echo chainsaw Yahoo group....Bob

Airplane you are aware of rc universe.com are you not? Many new and used gas engines. A lot of them are conversions like the ones Bob posted. The rest are dolmars and such. You can buy a good used one as cheap as you can convert one.

Bob, I like the PB400. I have only seen one before. I will have to keep an eye out for it at the local small engine shops. Do you know the finished weight?

Eric, I am aware of RCU and frequent it often. I have done several conversions with Stihl, Ryobi and Poulan. I thought I would tap the resources and knowledge of you saw experts to see if there is something out there that us RC guys have overlooked. Like the PB400 for instance.

No, I don't know the weight. I got those pics off of ebay to add to my Echo collection. I saw one go cheap a while back...Bob

The DA 50 is as good as or better then anything you will find here. Thats next on my list but you will hear me cry from a long ways away when I pay for it. The crankcase is built as small and strong as you can get it. No big heavy fly wheel, and from the people I have talked to in the 50cc range its a power house. Good for unlimeted verticle for up to 17lb plane I think. Dont get me wrong,a 50cc conversion would be neat but to get it anywhere close to the DA50 will run the cost way up and you still wont have a da 50. For useing saw engines for airplanes the plane guys are way head of the saw guys. Used to I dident care how much my planes weighed but after flying some lighter planes Im convinced I dont want any more weight then need be. If you are not that worried about the weight keep looking at the saw engines. There are some powerhouse engines in both the 40 and 50cc range.

Bob, Since you are an Echo guy you will recognize this. http://www.bmeengine.com/html/44.htm It is straight out of this http://www.echo-usa.com/oot/docs/CS4400T1E00_052704_2.pdf
The BME is a good airplane engine and it is sold for over $500. It is considered one of the top gas engine brands like DA, but is not specifically manufactured for the hobby like DA.
Another is the BME 50cc http://www.bmeengine.com/html/50.htm and its Echo counterpart http://www.echo-usa.com/oot/docs/CS510_060903.pdf

I would love to have either of those engines since the conversion parts can be readily purchased from BME.

Eric, the DA 50 is a good engine and very light since it was purpose built for the hobby, but the above engines are also light and strong even though they were built for a saw. The Brison 3.2 is one of the best engines out there and the jug/piston came from a Dolmar. I can't afford $500-$600 for any engine anyway. That is why I am here asking about conversion canidates. Plus I like to tinker with the engines. I am looking for an engine for my Robinhood so weight is not that big of a deal.

We have strayed a bit from the topic of the thread. I was wanting to know if there are saw engines in the 40-50cc range that could be easily removed from the saw and that is light and powerful.

Possibly the engines in the stihl MS290, 310, or 390 would work, they're easily removed, and I think the sort you're seeking. or an engine from a Poulan wildthing would work too.

You could use engine from brushcutter (40 to 65 cc roughly )from any major saw manufacturers. The engine itself "split" at the clutch end you can bolt 4 bolts on the crankcase to hold a support or something else.check for Josa RS 52,Husqui 252 RX,Stihl FS 450 or Echo CS series.

Im aware of the dolmar jug and piston on the brison. I have an extra dolmar saw 50cc laying around, brand new and I thought about doing what you are trying to do. It has a chainsaw crankcase just like all chainsaws, not purpose built for airplanes. Thats one strike. It has a big flywheel. Thats 2 strikes. I cant think of any 40 or 50 cc saw engine that you can say is light compared to the purpose built plane engines. Theres a 3.2 dolmar conversion at rc for $175.00 but look at it, its a lead sled compared to the purpose built engines. Im pretty sure no matter what the brand of saw you are going to run into the samething if its in that same cc engine.

I would say that,s a better route to go. I had almost forgotten my husky clearing saw is 45cc and has nearly no crankcase. That gets rid of some of the weight then there is still the flywheel but I dont think its as big as the chainsaw.
