How many of you run .404 pitch chain? I own two saw's that only see .404 as I have a large spool of square chisel Oregon I picked up years ago when a hard wear store was closing down. I only use it on my mac sp105 and 056.I was looking for some loops of round chisel the other day and almost****my pants at the cost! let's over say 60.00 bucks for a 32'' loop. I think I have gotten pretty good at sharpening the square ground. I really do not see much diff in the cutters between 3/8 and .404 just a thicker gauge and a little more meet on the .404 cutters. Why so much more money for the .404 I do not live in big timber country so maybe thats why.My main question would be is why do they make .404 chain? To me it really does not look any tougher than 3/8ths

I get RS .404 loops for about $38 at my local "way over priced" shop, and those are big loops (92 drivers).

That's what they wanted up here at the local Stihl dealer and I might add it was not Stihl chain! If I buy any round chisel I will get it from Bailey's. My Jred dealer does not have any .404 in stock or I would have gone to them. They are the best I needed a link to add to a chain for my new bar they did'nt just give me one they offered to put it in and I did'nt even buy the bar from them I bought one of those close out Bailey's Carlton ones a 15'' small mount husky said uses 56dl but really needed 57dl no Problem I thought I will just add a link went to my Jred dealer and asked for one tie strap and drive link. They were more than happy to do it for me! and I was going to do it myself. Now my Jred dealer is honest and said they would not bring in any .404 as they buy it by the spool and it is not worth it because of such low demand. But they offered to look around and see what they could do.

Bailey's has Oregon 59CJ square ground skip for $0.24/DL. At 92 DLs, that's only $22.08 plus shipping.

I'd say what you found was marked up painfully high. Run away!

I am lucky to have at least 50' of square ground left I just wanted some easy to sharpen round but will stick to my square as I have lot's of it. I am not going to buy chain at that price! And but that I mean my price not yours I would buy it at .24 a drive link.

Oops, sorry.

Oregon 59J round ground skip, same price.
Oregon 59L regular round ground, same price.

Why not round file some of the square then?
Yes indeedy, you can make round square or square round or half and half,if you've a mind to.

As far as the price,it's hard to beat Baileys. If however you buy Stihl chain, which is excellent ,you will pay about double the price of Oregon,Woodsman pro or Carlton.Weather it's worth the extra has long been a debated issue. Some people get rather bent out of shape on these discussions,I don't.Buy what you want and file it however you choose to.

the biggest thing for me is I am ruining my square ground by turning it into round plus to much filing for my liking. I wanted some round for dirty wood.
I think I will check out baily's for a 3/8bar as .404 is really hard to find locally

As a matter of record,Baileys has .404 by .063 Oregon in round and square chisel plus semi chisel all at 24 cents per drive link. For anybody interested they have ,404 by .058 Carlton real cheap on a close out deal,I ordered a roll last week.
