You've established a budget. What are your needs? Or do you simply want to buy the biggest, heaviest saw you can afford?

Ken, that eBay deal looks awful suspicious. Read his feedback (only one person) and then go read that person's feedback.

(comment: "Great Chainsaw!!!" but the item was a set of motorcycle turn signals. )

tree thinning I need a powerfull fast cutterthat weighs less than 14 lb. I use a 310 now so anything will be better hahahahaha and the 395 is WAY to heavy for me I was thinking like 361 or dolmar 6400

For a stock saw I agree with Simon. If you go modded, you have a few more options. I probably shouldn't mention it because you will invariably ask all the 'modded saw' questions asked by every other person who might have a passing curiosity about modded saws.

But to get back on topic- If I were to be in the market for a saw less than $600, I'd be looking at a modified Dolmar 5100. I could buy one, have it modded and shipped to my door for less than $600 and it would outcut a Stihl 360 (I haven't run a 361 yet, can't compare).

i've been following these saw's for a while now, i think the same person has 2 accounts set up. he has sold a bunch of 395's and 3120's recently. joseph from this site just bought a 395xpg from the same guy i just bought mine from. both sellers are in rock hill sc. yes it does sound suspicious but the guy has a phone # listed as well to call and put your mind at ease. plus if you use paypal you have some protection.

your just a naysayer about ebay because you don't use it or trust it. but i've gotten some great deals on ebay. new in the box 357 for 350.00.........new in the box 395 with 36in bar and chain 616.00 i bought 2 other 395's at 725.00 another at 665.00 should i go on? plus i've sold alot of stuff on there. my feedback is at 111:D

I found the perfect deal today for you. I was offered an mint Jonsered 2171W with heated hadles 2003. I think you can have it for 400$ Canadian. The saw is in Erin.
PM me and I will give you his #. I didn't need it so I didn't buy it.
It has extra chains too.
John

For $600, I'd look into the Dolmar PS5100 and some PPE to go with it, along with files, chains, and bars.

you sound like a candidate for the Ms440 . I have personally used the 044 and MS440 for thinning radiata pines with 18-20" stems and they are great saws to use weight and comfort wise and have that extra bit of booggie when you need it. if you are wanting to go over 20" in bar size then consider the MS460 magnum. and if you can try and get one with a full wrap handle instead of half wrap for those difficult areas where you cant acces the the other side of the tree to make the back cut

Another vote for the MS361!

It weights close to two lbs less than the Dolmar, and it is not that far behind in power.
Based on your earlier description of the work you do (11" dbh and smaller trees), power to weight ratio should be more important than pure power for you.

If the weight of the 6400 is acceptable, you should rather consider the 7300/7900, MS440 or Jonsered 2171. The streight across front handlebar on the Jred is not inconvenient when you are felling only.
