I got a call to quote a removal job tuesday, 7 trees ranging from 95 to 125 foot tall. all trees are no more than 3 foot away from some sort of stucture (house, barn, fence, seller, ect.) I plan on lifting 5 of the trees in three sections over the house or barn. all and all just another day at the office. but the trees are of exellent quaility and rather than hacking them up for firewood i had the idea of selling them to one of my normal log buyers. my idea was to use the crane to load the logs straight onto the semi rather than letting the groundy's mess with them. has any one ever done it this way or have i lost my mind?

pictures to follow, but getting them tuesday was hopeless due to the downpour for the past three days

That's a lot of moving pieces to make it work, could get very expensive if you cut into the logs and they turn out to be junk and you already have the truck lined up. The log buyers we work with don't want to send a truck out until you have at least 5000bf of logs to move. Do you think you have that much good saw logs in 7 trees? We haven't ever loaded a trailer with our cranes on a job but we have tried loading trailers with our log trucks on a couple big jobs and it turned out to be more of a pain then worth it. It takes a lot of room to get all those trucks on a jobsite. Then you have all the extra mess from bucking the logs on the customers property. If your able your better off staging all the wood at your shop and putting together a good load, unless you have the perfect jobsite and perfect trees to make it all work.

the jobsite is fairly open with enough space, my plan was to top the trees and put them in a corner of the property. then take the trunk out in two sections and set them directly on the truck and have one of my guys buck them sitting on the truck. i own the trucks so i'm not real concerned about costs of them being there. i estimated the total BF to be right around the 4200 mark. all but one tree seems to be in exellent health and if it wasn't the down season i am sure they would go for veneer. one of the trees did get hit by lightning about a month ago and it pretty much destroyed the integrity of the tree, i'm still hoping to get a few pallet logs out of it tho.
i have a quote for a 160ft. 80 ton crane @ $260 dollars an hour with a four hour min. i'm hoping to have all the crane work done in six hours and have him off the payroll. i have quoted the job at $2200 for the crane $600 for the trucks and $6800 for the tree work, and split the proffit of the logs 50/50 with the HO. I have an amish guy that is wanting to buy the logs for somewhere in the .85 cents a BF range. that would come out to $3570 for the logs and a total gross profit of $11385.
HO called this morning and gave me the go ahead, i'll be out there tomorrow to take some pictures and pick up some earnest money.
Any more imput would be much appreaciated, -Brad

.85 per bdft what kind of logs are they? The mills here give around .50 at most .65

two white oaks, three walnuts, one tulip, and one shag bark.

the walnut market up here is going crazy, i have been selling grade saw logs up here for up to $1.90 a BF. on the other hand my black oak is only going for .25-.30 a BF. i have never sold any tulip befor but the amish guy says he is confident he as a good little market for it and is willing to take it

I'd be interested to see if

A. You get the job at the price quoted.

B. If you do get the job, what you actually make VS what you have projected when it's all said and done.
