I am thinking about buying a chip truck it has a 444 7.3 liter in it.. Has any body ran one of these as a chip truck if so was it capable of tow a model 13 chipper and 10 yards of chips??

It's a 7.3. The transmission is the key to making use of it. Do you know what the trans is and what the horsepower rating is?

Otherwise, they're bulletproof and easy to work on.

It is an automatic transmission Allison known for their toughness not too sure about the horsepower trying to get that information I know it is a nonturbo but I could always put one on it bottom line it only has 32,000 miles on a 92 I think it's a no-brainer going to have to buy it.
Thanks again for the reply

I meant how many gears. I know a 1992 will be non turbo. The problem is that you can't really wind out a 7.3 like a 6.0 or a smaller block diesel V8 because the power band is narrower because of the increases stroke length and no turbocharger. Thus, you need more gears to keep it in its powerband.

I would change the rear end gears to a lower ratio to help with the torque and pulling power.

I had a 7.3 in a 89 s 1600. You can't compare them to modern trucks of the same size when it comes to power but they will make you money. Up hill, the shoulder is the place you'll be, with your hazards on.

Where did the rest of the posts go in this thread? There was some more posts, one person talking about the 8.2L Detriot.

The DT444 in anything heavier than a pickup is going to be a slug. Heck even in a pickup it's a slug. We have a 90ish Ferd Super Duty (basically an F450 before that existed) and with a load of wood it's almost laughable, can almost hold 60-65 on flat ground, but forget it on any hills... 1st and 2nd gear on anything over a small knoll.

I'm pretty sure my Chevy C30 with a 160hp small block loaded with 2 cords could beat it with no load.

It's a simple engine and will be decent on fuel, but don't expect to be able to hang in with highway traffic.

So thanks for the info but.... Maybe I should have mentioned that the 7.3 is in a 92 International has crazy low 32,000 original miles..

32.000 miles or 132,000 miles, that truck needs a low rear end ratio. Full load of chips pulling a chipper and you'll quickly blow the tranny. If it's just a load of chips fine but with the chipper its to much. The low gear ratio will save the tranny. 6:14 ratio should be the right ratio with an automatic.

It does have 32,000 original milesSuperclean truck thank you for the info on the gearing in the rear end as we will be towing a chipper

I have the same truck and drivetrain combo but with a 14x6' high chip box so it gets heavy. Truck is 15,000 empty, add 12,500 for chips and you're at 27,500. Add a 10,000 pound chipper and you're at 37,5000.

That's a big chip box!A load of chips on this truck would weigh somewhere around 6 to 7000..curious if your truck has a turbo??
