It opened okay for me. Why not just run a good stiff tape out to the edges? Better yet try the method I mentioned in the other thread-measure around the stump at ground level.

I use the "soil crown" measurement on big trees, since it is what will be ground out if done right. I never measure at the cut.

BTW, is that how my postings look to you guys? ;)

The only time we measure a stump if its just huge and we want to know what it is for bragging rights. I think a tape measure is perfect for measuring the top of the stump. Your invention would be good for measureing the root crown, but i think it wouldnt be so good for measuring the stumps top. If you cant manage the tape with two hands, adding yet another thing to hold wont help. Exsperiance helps alot also, my father and I (sound like trees Company ) can look at a stump and tell its size in inches to a pretty close margin of error.

Such as we have done 2 stumps at different times and places that measured over 10' at the cut.

The way we price is based on how long the stump should take us. We charge (in our heads) a base price of $125 an hour with the RG85 with a $50 minimum. When we first started we considered measuring every stump but that takes to long. We rarely go under our $125 an hour mark, and when we do its not by much. I say figure what you need to charge by the hour and go from there.

Works for us.

Carl, your spelling is much more gooder than TC. :D

Is exsperiance spelled right? I do have a hard time with spelling but i try to make it right and use basic english grammar skills to use correct punctuation and such.

No, but you didn't say your dad smashed lobsters with his bare hands or laughed at people that used "crains" so you get extra points for that. :)

Hey Stumped for Life,

It's a good Idea to measure the crown at soil level, well done. Also take into consideration the depth that the customer requires it to be ground, roots that need to be chased, hardness of timber, type of soil, access, and travel time.

So! Stumped for life, are you telling us you are going to carry around these curtain rods with you ( that are good for nothing else on the job) simply to determine the base of the stump?
Where is RockyJSquirrell when you need him?

i was thinking about the curtain rods beacuzz on some of the big stumps its a hard for me to get a good maesurement with the curtain rods alls you gotta do is extend it untill each one of the legs are at the widest part of the stump at the bottum thin lay the tape maesure over the curtain road i dont now how it will work but i am gonna try it as soon as the darn snow melts! lol
