A buddy of mine pulled a 029 out of the dump. I didn't look at it for more than a couple minutes but here's what I could see:

-The top cover is gone exposing several head fins which are broken off.

-The air filter cover is missing.

-The chain brake and the rear & front handles are all broken.

-The bar & chain looked to be in tact and when I pulled the starter rope, it wasn't seized and seemed to have good compression (I'm assuming).

My guess is that this saw fell off some ones truck while tooln' down the highway at about 70 MPH. There could have been more broken pieces but that's all I saw during the quick visual I did.

My buddy owns a yard maintenance business and will eventually need a saw. Assuming this saws internals were fine and it ran good, would it be worth it replacing all that mentioned above or would he just be better off purchasing another saw? He's mechanically inclined so woudn't need to take it to a shop for the things I metioned.

For what it's worth, I doubt he'd ever need anything bigger than a MS260 sized saw for his work and he definitely wouldn't be using it every day (more likely a few times weekly at the most).

Thanks.

I'd hang onto it but not spend any money on it. Let the guys at the local saw shop know you're on the lookout for an 029 that someone ran straight gas through. If you can score a siezed one real cheap you will have enough parts to bash one saw together with a few left over spares. It would be possible to have a running 029 for less than $50 this way. I would not do a major repair to an 029 with new parts, Rocky's right, Stihl is proud of their parts.

Umm Ben, I think your discusted with most every saw you have....
I have been 100% happy with my Dolmar 7900, my old 044 and my 260 once the carb was replaced, but this 039 is another story. My dad picked the thing up used, but with very little time on it for use at our fishing lodge. I always bring up my 260 as well. The other day I hung the 260 up so I pulled the 39 out to free it up. It cut much slower than the 260 and is heavy as a tank. We mostly let our portage guy use it for clearing trails so it is holding up well so far, but the performance just stinks.
I thinbk the cheaper huskys(non-poulans) are much better.
