Darn shame. This is an old article but is worth reading. Rotten trees scare me.
That kind of thing isn't as common around here more guys get killed by butt-kick than hang-ups and snags.

which is why its important to find and escape route and use it rather than get killed. i personally would rather take a few extra possibly unneccesary steps than get the but if a big tree in my face. i know guys around here have had it happen and you can still tell years after because their faces are scarred up and deformed.
Yeah I heard a few happen, no stumpshot, stand near the stump while it's falling...well it only takes once.

There's always variables and its hard to define the exact 'right' way without seeing the tree and checking it out.
Sometimes its safer at the stump, sometims not.
I've had trees come back over the stump and land in my escape path, more than once. Sometimes, just sometimes, its best to wait and see, then move quickly the right way.
Sometimes the butts will shoot straight back when the top gets hung in a crotch.
Dangerous work.

Yeah, one thing that I get nervous about is when I cut trees is, when I see the tree is about to fall strait the wind picks up as it's falling and it gets hung up in a really close tree, which makes it stand almost straight up with nothing holding it.
