Seeing a lot of this all around the country, I guess. My wife and I also noticed a no-name crew (man and most likely his wife) doing some tree work in our neighborhood with a bucket truck retired from the local power company.

Ms KG42 pointed out the lack of safety gear on the guy doing the cutting.

No real point in this thread, other than hoping that the bad economy isn't driving too many people to take big risks. Charleston just won a huge new Boeing plant (787 assembly), so that should help some of these guys who desperately need work get something safer and more steady.

Advice for a homeowner

Hello,

As a homeowner, I am looking to have two large pines and one medium pine removed from my property. In the past year, I have taken down over 50 trees, ranging in size from 6" to 2' DBH. The pines I realize are out of my league, as one will definelty have to be climbed and pieced down.

How do I go about finding a qualified company who has the experience and insurance to perform the work safely? Using the phonebook can be a crap shoot, as three companies I ahve called do not exsist anymore.

Word of mouth recommendation, local chamber of commerce, if your town required a permit to be pulled before tree work is done, just go check to see what companies actually pull the permits.

Someone on here might step up and go look at it for you.

Check with local arborists association to see what credentials and experience each company has. Also, ask any company you call WHO will be doing the work - a trained arborist or an untrained newbie.
