I like many had a hard time when the economy went south a few years ago. I am a little picky who I work for, and I am to old take any abuse from Nazi Tree company owners, I tryed craigs list but so did every other out of work climber. No one it seemed was looking for a full time climber/foremen.
So I started asking around to Company's I was known at, if they ever needed someone just for a day or two, I would come in. Ie'd get a call our climber didn't show up today can you work? Or our climber isn't comfortable climbing ...........
I started looking in the phone book for good company's(made some errors in judgement)and offered my services, if they needed anyone for a day or two or a job I was available. Not everyone was receptive at first. But now I have been working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week, for 3 or 4 company's a week. I have 7 companies that use me on a regular basis. I get calls from companies that have heard about me from someone else.
Iv'e weeded out the People I don't like and have favorites that I like. This isn't contract climbing, though I charge more then I made with a full time job. Iv'e made a lot of new friends, I often am asked if I can bring a groundsmen or an other climber(s). I could almost open up a day labor for tree people.
I am in effect a day laborer who makes 200.00 a day. It's a abstract idea to most owner operators, but one they seem to warm up to once they see your for real. I work on payroll under their workers comp and insurance,(though I see a lot of cash)
This is working out really good for me. So much so I have turned down several good job offers for full time employment.
I am sure some will think this is a stupid idea, this isn't for you, but there maybe some who'll run with it and it'll payoff for them. I am just trying to give back a little.
I guess my next step is to get my contractors lic. and own insurence, and be a contract climber. I'm pushing 55 years old, I have to keep reminding my self of that fact. I wish I started doing this 20 years ago.
