Mark Bridges posted a note in the "Simple Safety for Ascenders" thread at Tree*uzz. Here's a link but AS might jam it.

Anyone who doesn't back up ascenders MUST read this article.

Thanks for the info, Tom. I use the Petzl for rec. climbing and back it up with the mini traxion. I haven't ever secured the rope with a biner, but will from now on for the added security.
 
When I first started climbing using SRT and ascenders I was buzzing around looking for info and read about putting a biner in the upper hole. After a week I started doing it to help keep small limbs and twigs away from the cam on the ascender. Much easier advancing through obstructing branches.
