Ignition module is shot on an old Stihl 036, salvaged from dump. Went online, and there are so many after-market modules (very cheap compared to OEM). Has anyone had any experience with these after-market modules, and if any are more reliable than others?

I have had two Farmertec 038's, one ready made and one kit I made. Never had any problems with the ignition.

Do you know what ignition module it has......is it a Stihl or some other type?
Aftermarket Sthil ignition, made in China not by Stihl. It's a non-original, non-OEM ignition module, made to replace the OEM ignition.
I have had no problems with the carburettors for this particular saw (038/381) also. Distributed by "Farmertec".

link......I found a Farmertech ignition module for my saw for $19. Not a fan of extended warranties, but for $2 got a 3 year fix or replace. I checked out the Farmertech website and looked at the kits. I figured the chance of getting an acceptable replacement ignition module made by them, was probably better than the $10 ones with a spark plug. Time will tell. One never knows. Thanks for your input.

They distribute - not a factory, but its a brand name to relate to. Most stuff from them is OK, not everything. I guess you will be happy, but consider it is not german quality control, most of the parts is OK, some are not. That is the cost. I guess you will be happy with it.

I only use very few selected parts OEM in my scratch builds, in some it might not even be necessary.
In my latest, a 372bb, I am not using any OEM parts, not that I dont have them...

A bit of luck involved with the AM modules. I have replaced a few modules on Stihl saws with excellent results and I have also tried several different ones for a Poulan with all of them wrong due to initial timing errors.

It is probably a crapshoot. Not knowing anything about the after-market modules, at least I was able to come up with a smidgeon of rationale for choosing one, thanks to this site.
Crapshoot it is. I nabbed a non-running Stihl 021 for free on Craigslist a couple years ago. All it needed was the ignition module but, as far as I know, OEM modules are no longer available. I tried two $8 modules from ebay and both failed within 1/2 hour of use. I bought another Chinese aftermarket module from an online parts dealer for about $30. I gave the saw to a friend about a year ago -- last I knew it's still working.

Ordered coil(s) from AliExpress for MAC 3200. So excited I ordered two. Both of them took so long to get to me after the COVID thing so I got refunded for both. When the coils finally got to me I determined that ignition timing was retarded. I built a jig to rotate the flywheel and see what was happening with a timing light. Shape and size fits the chainsaw but spark comes up with the exhaust port already open. Anyone get a good MAC3200 coil from AliExpress?
