Top handles are starting to get a bad rap because of sloppy and careless users. I am starting to think I need 3 hands.....

whats that third hand for? patting yourself on the back because you are two handing everything? why not man!

i hate seeing saw abuse in general. some people were taught how to operate a saw incorrectly and now the same people are tooo stubborn to admit they stink at saw work.

if your not the head of the crew its hard to tell em they stink directly so i usually break balls.

its aggressive but in good spirit. i only want to help? lol

Eagle1, What has occurred that brings this up? Are you referring to another thread, or something at work?

Add in some details and this has a chance of being a useful thread, and not another internet latrine to be filled by the first idiot.

Internet latrine, good one, thanks. Just for the record, I one hand, have cut myself, I still one hand, but now with more care. End of story, suck it up and lets get on with our lives.

I saw a earlier post where a guy named Darin actually asked for people to be extra cool as the winter is when it gets bad.

I would like to watch a guy always use both for a little while. I never saw it.

Top handled saws:

We were taught to drive using both hands on the wheel right? 10 and 2 were the old positions but they changed to 9 and 3 or 8 and 4 by the time I taught my kids to drive. Does not mean I cannot drive safely one handed.

Taught to run a saw with two hands as well, wether top handled or not. I one hand probably half of my cuts with top handled saws, and some with rear handled saws as well . . . BUT rest assured I think through each and every cut BEFORE finger touches that throttle at least once.

Most people should never one hand a chainsaw, and many people should never drive with only one hand on the steering wheel either.

I find it more dangerous to drive with one hand than to run a top handle with one. I assume that you assume I know how to cut. And drive.

I'm just interested in why Eagle1 posted what he did.

clearance, posting up about your cut remains to this day a slice above the rest, I guff you about your old school ways, but you have my respect.

treemandan, I'm trying to make sense of your posts. Should I take it that you were groundie for a Bucketman? Never, ever saw two hands on the saw?

randy g, Same here, agreed. I can ride a CBR1000RR behind a phalanx of slow Harleys one-handed all day. When it's time to leave them behind and go for broke, it takes two hands.

OK bad analogy.

Still interested in Eagle1's reason for posting.

I am still trying to find out where I went wrong. For your question: I interviewed ( years back) at a company that insisted on ALWAYS 2 on a top handle. I think that good and bad. I knew my 1 one handed style would have to change if I took the job. It was one of the main contributing factors of me not taking the job. I have thus improved my 1 handing over the years. I use both when needed. You can comment as you see fit.

This has been gone over several times, the TCIA mag(recent) just had another article on it, truth is & IMO most training today has been watered down to promote employees faster due to the lack of persons entering the field & the need for employees to get their top rate so the employer meets the criteria for the contract, also production especially in the Line clearance field.

whats this mean? well first off less training in the basics while more emphasis is put into acquiring the skills needed aloft!! secondly, production.......Yes the safest way is two hands, but now what? rope everything down?

common sense must be used & the problem is too many coming into this trade are trained for production value not safety!! how much time on the ground running a saw could a 22 yr old foreman have? I was brought up old school also & had more time on the ground with a saw when training than most do today that are crew leaders!!

The no one hand rule is a paper rule in most big companies, it might hold for the apprentice!! Its "I dont see it, its ok" type of thing. when the push for mileage, tree count, firm bid are done away with our industry will be safer!!

residential work should be bid with safety in mind & in this instance there is no excuse(sometimes) however Line work is a push, push, more, more & one handing is used cause it is just plain faster, not safer!! Faster!!

Imo, top handles are getting a bad rep because too many homeowners are using them in situations they were not made for. They walk into a dealer and they want "that cute little saw." Tophandles are made to be used in the tree-when was the last time you heard a climber give a 200t a bad rap?

Very True, i have been in my local lawn shop in San Diego, California...and time and time again would homeowners or wifes, come in wanting to buy there selves, husband, or someone a MS 192T or 200T...thinking its small and perfect for there needs.

Well one of the guys or gals in the shop....would find out there situation and suit them with the best saw for there situation.

When you look up any top handle saw, Stihl, Husky, Solo, Echo...who ever....they are always listed as "Arborist" saws...in my opinion resulting these saws are suggested for "Arborist" or trained professionals to use these saws in the situations they are made for.

10 and 2 ,, is old school... before power steering ...until air bags ....

they changed that so when the air bag in the steering wheel,, goes off,,, you don't punch yourself in the head !!!!!!

How many regular people will pay $500 for a "little" saw?

Top handles saws have the bad rap because so many people use one hand on the saw, one on the wood as a rule, not an exception.

Its a matter of self responsibility, If I one hand & get cut......My fault!!! I think our trade has enough rules & laws, they just need enforced!! I personally see nothing wrong with using one hand while reaching out away from you, If you`re gonna make a back cut in front of your face one handed thats just stupidity!!!

IMO these saws were created for multipurpose use while aloft, in close quarter situations you can use both hands comfortably, Their lite enough so as if one hand is needed that too can be comfortable(weight/balance).

problem I see when 1 handing is a guy crossing his holding arm over the cutting arm, or holding a branch,etc.. to close to the saw, also many are right handed so when they have to cut using the left hand(weaker) upon finishing the cut I often hear the saw rev. at full blast!!

all i can say is..................

try and take my top handle out of my "one hand" and see what happens.
