Confession time:

I've been working with my 372XP and have been pretty disappointed. Couldn't get it to run right, carb seemed to not settle in and lacked power to pull a 24" bar gracefully with LG. Some of you responded to earlier posts on the problems suggesting things like air leaks in the fuel line or carb.

I had modified my muffler shortly after getting the saw, and went a little bigger than the recommended two 1/2" holes joined. I actually did an oval approximately 1.125" x .6 instead of 1.0" x .5". in addition to bending out the factory exhaust port on the top slightly. I didn't intend to make it bigger, it just ended up that way by the time I made all the cut-outs nice and pretty with my Dremel. I'm surprised that such a small deviation can make a difference, but I guess it can.

I remembered several posts cautioned about opening up the muffler too much, so today I decided to restrict the muffler slightly by placing a 0.2" strip of stainless vertically in the center of my modded port opening.

Ba-da-bing, it instantly ran better and with a little tweeking of the jets its running about 1,500 rpms better in the wood @10,000 - 11,250 rpm's with the 24" bar sunk in pine. The saw seems to have settled in between the 4 cycle zones between too rich and the coil limiter. I can even lean into a little with the dogs. What a relief! This thing was way too expensive to be equalled by my old Mac! I hope to give her a few hard workouts in the next few weeks and confirm my initial impressions. I may try to locate some posts on polishing the ports and whatever else I can reasonably do to squeeze a little extra out of this thing.

Thanks for all the posts and personalized suggestions over the last few weeks. What a great hobby!
