Does anyone here use either Maxi Flow or the NWP Heavy Duty air filters that Bailey's sells on their milling setup? What are the pro's and con's that you have found?
 
The OEM HDI or HDII filters are plenty good, though they don't always seal satisfactorily. There are fixes for the sealing issue.

The NWP filter is just a copy of the OEM HDI.
 
I have worked in some pretty dry and dusty situations on very hard woods so one does end up making a lot of fine dust but have not yet felt the need for anything other than a standard filter.

One thing I have noticed when using a saw with a conventional or forward facing exhaust ports in a standard CS mill is the exhaust bounces forward off the log and "fluffs up" some of the sawdust exiting the kerf into a small fog around the operator and saw. I first noticed this problem when using both a 3120 and an 066 in a conventional CSM with both seeming to need their filters cleaned more often than saws like my 076, which has a muffler exit near the trigger handle, and my muffler modified 880.

As well as less dust there is also far less exhaust fogging the operator's working environment so all this suggests to me that rather than focusing on band-aiding the air filter it may be better to focus on the exhaust.

When I built my airfilter for my 820 Westbend motor, I used a filter from a 090 Stihl. I also purchased the felt piece that fits over the filter element to keep as much dust from getting into the carb. I spray the outer felt element with a produce that K&N Filters makes for offroad filters for very dusty conditions, and it really works great! When I'm done milling I spray it down with Simple Green and hose it off and let it dry.

Here is a picture of the piece I made for for the carb for sealing the filter element. I couldn't find anything commercially available, so I had to make this piece to fit the 1" carb venture.

Here you can see the additional felt element that is sold for these airfilter elements. They are a little extra $$, but well worth the price. The K&N product I ues is called a 'Recharger Filter Care Service Kit'. It comes with a bottle of Airfilter cleaner and a spray can of their "Air Filter Oil', I spray filter element with the Air Filter Cleaner and let it set for a few minutes, then just hose it off with the water hose. You can use the same cleaner for the felt liner, but I prefer Simple Green, I think it cuts the oil off better.

I used to use this smaller K&N filter, but it just didn't work as well as the larger Stihl filter. I am fortunate that the 820 Westbend motors has the exhaust location where I was able to fabricate my exhaust pipe to exit out and away for the operator. This picture is from the operator side of the mill that shows the exhaust location and where the carb is located.

Thanks for the reply's glad to here that the factory filter does the job it is supposed to. Bob I have been thinking about a muffle rebuild similar to yours.
