I just purchased an old Asplund truck with an Altec LR IV-50 bucket. The truck has no outriggers and never did. Can anyone enlighten me to why this truck would not have ever had outriggers? Its a 1998 C6500 with a 366 engine. It has no pony motor, a small dump body, and is under CDL. It appears that the suspension on the truck has been beefed up and has some type of stabilizer setup attached to the frame. Any information on this type of truck would be much appreciated.

Post some pics. I've seen 47 ft combo lifts with torsion bars and pressure diggers with spring locks but NEVER a set up like your describing on an LR-IV. Unless it has several limit switches to prevent travel over certian areas? But I do not see this unit going overcenter or to the side without outriggers. I would strongly advise you to not use that lift AT ALL without getting to the bottom of this. I would definitely be interested in some pics though. I think TreeCo might be on the right track with an unfinished project.

sounds like you are stuck with somoene else's reason to get rid of it.

That truck is required to have outriggers.

Strange. Maybe ask Asplundh.

Yes... Got a good deal at an auction. The whole no outrigger thing is starting to worry me. This bucket was in use with no outriggers previously. I have a call into Altec to get some advice so hopefully someone can shed some light on the situation.

I spoke with Altec. They matched the serial number of the boom to the vin of the truck. The truck was built without outriggers and has been tested to be stable. There is what he called an outrigger sub-base incorporated on the chasis. He said I could test it by loading the bucket to 1.5 times the weight capacity and swinging it around in all directions keeping the bucket low to the ground. This news makes me feel a little better ;-)

One thing I've learned being in the aerial lift repair industry for almost ten years is that you see something new and different all the time. Wow, I had never heard of that!! I've run some larger lifts without outriggers and they sure are bouncy. I would think that thing is going to bounce quite a bit when over-center but who knows this is all new to me!! You could always add some outriggers after the fact if it feels too soft.
