Hi I was just wondering if anyone knew where the tank vent was on the Dolmar 6400-7900. I seem to be pressuring up really bad when it gets warm and/or when it gets shook up alot (walking). CAnt seem to find the vent on the saw or by looking through the ipl. Thanks in advance

the tank vent is on the left side of the saw on the gas tank. You can see it in the seam between the recoil housing and the rear handle/gas tank. the early vents had issues with the foam filter letting fine sawdust through and blocking up the vent valve the newer saws and parts use a sintered style filter in lew of the foam

Pressure is fine and normal. Vacuum is not. Your tank vent prevents a vacuum, but allows the build up of pressure.

Boy, does it ever! I find it very annoying every time I pull the line off a carb and fuel gushes everywhere. You'd think that I'd learn to drain/vent the tank, but I can't seem to get it through my thick skull:confused:

Thanks brad, I figured a little pressure would be ok. And vaccum is a big problem. But I went to take my carb off last night to clean it and right when i pulled the fuel line off the carb nipple it spewed a stream of gas on my chest, so i pointed the other way and it sprayed my whole bench down, nearly drained the tank that was half full. Freaked me out at first. Hmm, i guess tha would be normal since the vent is a one way valve, and that needle and seat in the carb takes care of the fuel IN the carb....I guess i answered my own question....THanks for the help....and I found this in another thread.....

look in the seam between the recoil and the tank assy. the vent is in sight the old style had a foam screen while the new style has a white ceramic type filter to keep more of the fines out of the vent.

I keep an assortment of hemostats on my bench for the purpose of closing off fuel lines. Hemostats are one of the handiest and most-used tools that I own.

Just wondering where i can find a replacement tank vent?

I just purchased a used makita off of ebay. I was expecting a few minor problems and of course I do have them. The first and foremost is the tank vent is stuck open I believe. The saw leaks fuel pretty good when turned on it's side. Anyone know of the best place I could purchase this part? I'm also looking for a 24" bar for the makita 6401? Anybody got anything out there that will work or know of any sales going on? Thanks for your time and have a great day.

Fuel tank vent for makita 6401

After posting a question about where I could find a tank vent for the 6401 someone quickly replied for me to contact you. I just made a ebay purchase on the 6401 and after filling the tank I have leakage coming out of the fuel tank vent. Althought it may just have something stuck in it I heard the newer models are better than the old ones. Any chance you could help out or point me in the right direction? Thanks for your time and have a great day.

Sincerely,

Buck

Hi Buck, Welcome to Arboristsite! Just click on EdgeandEngine's name in the post and select "send a private message to EdgeandEngine", Hope that helps. How much did you end up paying for the Makita, if you dont mind me asking? I've got one up on ebay, and am curious to see what its worth(suppose I'll find out at the end of auction LOL).

makita 6401

I got mine for about $250 with shipping and all. Got it a couple days ago and cleaned it up and then took it to a buddy at a local equipment store and they did a pressure check. I was hitting a little above 150 psi which I guess is in a acceptable range. The only issue that I've noticed so far is a 'open' gas relief valve. Trying to find the part to replace it. Gotta run. Have a great day.

Sincerely,

Buck

How did the tank vent repair turn out? I'm looking at the same problem you had and wonder what it'll cost and how easy is the fix?

tank vent repair still on hold

I've had the gas tank vent for a while now, but haven't attempted to replace it yet. To be honest I don't know exactly how to go about it, but I figured I will try and tackle it when I get a Bailey's big bore kit. (Hopefully that will be within the next week or so.) Once everything is a little more apart I might have a better idea of what needs to be done. If I hear of any ideas or after the replacement is done I will let you know how I went about it. If you or anyone else replaces theirs before me then please let me know what it took to replace it. Thanks.

I just did a little searching and the repair manual says the fuel tank needs to be removed to replace the vent.
