Throw out bearing started making all kinds of noise yesterday. It has been hard to get full clutch dis-engagement for awhile now. That has probably been the problem.
No signs of slippage ,but no way in hell am I going to seperate motor $ tranny and not put new stuff back in it.As I was checking for prices on the kit I found out that some of these had what is called a dual mass flywheel which is very costly or can be converted to single mass.

My few questions are as follows:

.Is there any way to tell which flywheel it has before tearing it all down? Can it be idendified with the dust cover removed?

2.Thinking of pulling the engine and changing the clutch out on the chain because of the 4 wheel drive [tranny and transfer case look heavy as hell.]
Anybody worked on one of these?

Oh almost forgot the specs.

94 F-350 7.3 powerstroke turbocharged 5spd plus transfer case plus PTO for the boom.

Any help appreciated.

Beg, borrow, or steal a tranny jack. If not pulling the engine will be real hard since the engine will have to tilt going back in and you'll still have to pill the transmission brackets and cross members. I would convert to a single mass since there's no springs in the flywheel with it. The dual mass is a disaster waiting to happen.

I need to replace my dual mass now. What a POS and why do they get by with making junk? And not even covered by my extended warranty???

POS deluxe.

My parts quote on: Flywheel, Extra HD clutch, slave cyl and master cyl , pressure plate and throwout was $ 815 tax incl. I haven't got them installed yet. But that SOUNDS reasonable. I just shouldn't have to do it.

Tarry on.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I might start getting prices to just have it done .With the limitede tools I have ,it may be just as easy in the end to let a shop do it.

I found a shop that will put my parts on for $ 525. They explained exactly how to do it, and came recommended.

Around here the diesel shops charged $250-350 for a clutch job.

I worked for Ford for 7 years as a senior master tech. If you can get your hands on a trans jack it isn't a bad job at all. DEFINATELY change to a single mass flywheel! If you have any questions feel free to Pm me.

Update

Mechanic sent me to his parts house to check on prices. Not too shabby.
$375.00 for the disc, cover T/O bearing ,pilot and a new one pc. flywheel.

He wants 5bones for the labor.Said he will pull the moter since his lift is not heavy enough to lift my truck.

I got a little $400.00 prune job tomorrow morning,[fingers crossed] then off to the shop with it.
For under 9 bills ,it ain't worth me F-ing with it.Hope to have it back Wed by noon.

Final update

Well,it's done and all is working great.Turned out to be a bit of a P>I>T>A>though.Turns out he had no labor to help him ,so guess who got to stick around and help ?

Yea,it was tons of fun .Too heavy for his lift and he didn't want to pull tranny, transfer case and PTO and pump on his back. So we went with pulling the engine.

Topside was pretty normal:unplug wire harness, remove radiator, fan,ac compressor, power steering etc.The good part came when we started on the exhaust. That flattened out pc of crap that is crammed up the passenger side was a bear to remove ,as well as 3 of the upper bell housing bolts.
Engine would not come forward enough to raise past the front crossmember without removing the oil filter.

Anywho. After much pursuasion and a lot of language not used in front of ladies and small children it was out ,hanging on a chain from a forklift and resting on an old tire. Off with clutch pp and the junkie 2pc flywheel, then wait until the next morning for the parts that were promised to be there ''First thing in the morning''they made it there 11:30AM and was the wrong F.:bang:W.

Next day ,all correct parts were there ''first thing in the morning'' ,AGAIN, 11:frickin 30 .

Installed the new one PC disc and cover and actually put it back in the truck faster than it came out.
Here's a good tip for anyone who ever needs to R&R a 7.3 in the future.Remove the 4 frontmost cab bolts and raise the cab 4-5 inches. We decided to do that while we had so much down time waiting on the parts. With an impact it was a pc of cake and saved us a TON of time and effort. Wishe we had done it before. all the room in the world mating the motor /tranny and for BH bolts and rehooking the exhaust down pipe.

Someone pulled the engine for $ 500? Sounds cheap , but what do I know.

He's an old buddy I know from racing back in the day.Not exactly a 5 star repair shop . Was owned/managed by his dad but now he has passed and the guy is doing his best to stay afloat. He said he has never done a 7.3 before and agreed to stay at the 500 price so long as I helped.

$ 525 was the price I got, with the master and slave cylinder. But I don't think he's pulling the engine...

I have my own shop and am a do it your self kind of guy but I've also evolved over the past few years. If it's during the winter months or have the time I do it myself. My summers get very busy and If I have other stuff going on,(stump grinding) that makes me money, I'll hire it out and make money to pay for it. If you have tree work to do, hire it out for $525. I've learned the hard way it's cheaper to pay someone else sometimes.

There were extenuating curcumstances for pulling the motor ie,huge transfer case both shafts and a big PTO with the intergrated hydro pump on it.A lot of iron hanging behind that motor.

Update on mine, the parts came to $ 715. tax included. We'll see if they were short any.
