I'm an official Biofueler now. Ordered a real nice system from Guy Purcela and EZBiodiesel.com. He's an expert on the source, having wrote a book on it "Do it yourself guide to Biodiesel." I've collected 45 gallons of wvo already this week, most from large chains ironically! Can't wait till the tanks get here so i can start production. Did a few titrations and the oil looks to be a fantastic good source!! Been runnin some test batches in the kubota and runnin fine. I've got a guaranteed combined source of 40 to 50 gallons a week and i only use around 30, so i'll be in good shape. I would like to hear from you others that are doin the same and share knowledge and trials and errors!! Happy and Safe fuelin

I was listening to a radio interview with a large multi state yellow grease recycler out of the South. They aren't taking kindly to folks "stealing" grease that they had contracts for. Expect to hear about arrests and lawsuits as more people think they can get 'free' fuel by using oils that the restaurants already had contracts for.

Another thing to be careful of is .gov will want taxes paid on any fuel used in on road vehicles. I dont know if they can nail you on anything used off road, but I would check into it.

An acquaintance of mine goes around with a coffee can taped to the end of a broom handle and scoops veggie oil out of the waste tanks at local restaurants. Then he tansfers it to 5-gallon jugs, strains it and runs it as is. So far, he's filled up a 200-gallon storage tank. He has a set up whereby he starts his engines with diesel then shuts the diesel tank off and runs off the veggie oil. I don't know if what he's doing is considered "stealing" or "garbage picking". As far as I know he asks permission from the management. Burger King and a couple others won't let him touch a drop. Looks like there's going to be quite a market for this waste oil as more people catch on....

There have been a spike in thefts of wvo out of contractors grease bins. Fortunately for me, the only oil i get is given to me by managers that i know personally and i get it straight outta the fryer when they change em. This way i don't get rinse water or chemicals from the cleaning of the fryers. A local chain store mgr gave me some oil from his fryers, but i explained to him illegal for me to take from the outdoor receptacle. Law says even though they're on a contract, the only oil i can take legally is the oil outta the fryers. So that's what i do. Once it does go into the contractors bin, it's their property and it's stealing if you take it.

Costs ?

What are the costs with this process? Do you buy the oil, or do you just pick it up? What about conversion expenses?

I already have the tanks and pumps set up for my waste oil burner, I just don't have enough oil.

If the restaraunt employees give you the oil, it's not theft. There is no crime.

There is only a civil contract issue between the grease recycler and the restaraunt.

The person collecting it is in the clear. Unless the grease recycler can show that the individual knew about the contract, they aren't going to have any case against him, and even then it's not criminal, it's a civil action.

Now, if they just help themselves behind the restaraunt, of course it's theft.

I just read recently about them cracking down on this, HARD. Somebody was facing a few thousand in taxes and fines, IIRC.

Biodiesel unlike dyed offroad diesel is very hard to distinguish while in a trucks tank or system. They'd literally have to be in my basement when i fill up to prove i'm runnin it. Gonna take my chances as long as i can and keep low key!!! If they smell it, my response is the truth" i payed cash down at the co-op for the biodiesel , my cpa dosn't let me count fuel just mileage!"
