I am looking at a Carlton 5700-4 stump grinder and wonder if anyone has any experience with one. I'd like to know how good a machine it is and if there are any inherent problems with them.

Thanks,
Chris

Yeah, I see what you mean. It looks like the SP7015. This is a 2001 year model, so I guess Carlton has changed their number system now.

Thanks,
Chris

They used to do the numbers based on the horsepower of the unit but now they do it based on grind width and depth.

I'm guessing a 5700 was a 57 hp machine? I haven't seen too many 5700s most are the 4400 which you could get with the 60 horsepower diesel. (Which goes against what I just said about the horsepower numbering. lol)

If it's like the 4400 then they did have problems with traction. They had tires like a forklift and the newer one have them like a skid steer. People have said that they would get stuck on their own shadow.

Other than that I haven't heard anything really bad about them. I'm sure someone will chime in if they have.

I saw that that one was for sale when I was looking and couldn't find a match either. If you are looking or know anyone that is looking for something equal, mine is for sale in the tradin post. I have a 2006 SP7015 with wireless and wired remote for back up for $24,750 with 171 hrs just south of Atl. Good luck at finding any info on that machine because I couldn't either. Is it the one that is kind of an orange color?

I'm pretty sure you could get any of them painted any color.

My SP7015 TRX is blue.

Yep, that's it. I'm trying to get a diesel model, and I have heard good things about Carlton. I'm just wondering abotu possible design issues that people have run into, like the Vermeer tracked models I have heard they have issues with throwing tracks. Of course, I have also heard that if they are throwing tracks you are not operating the unit correctly.
Just want to see about people's experiences with this model.

Thanks,
Chris

Just checked it out on Ebay to see what you guys were talking about. I couldn't believe the number of stump cutters on there - a lot more than I used to see.

Trailer wheels look like mobile home type - you don't want to rely on these axles if you are doing much towing.

The other thing that always scares me is "freshly rebuilt engine" You really would need to see who did the rebuild and what they did along with a warranty. Usually these engines ingest dirt - pretty much ruins everything, including the turbo.

Price looks good!

The seller said it was a 2001. He bought it from the seller that bought it from Carlton in 2004. He said he bought it in February and found it doesn't fit his need as well as he expected, grinding stump in the woods.
I went on and bought it.
Pav,
That thing about the hydraulic fluid, do you have any more info on it?

Thanks,
Chris
