I bought an alaskan mill that came with an 051 with a 36" bar last year. I only got to use it on one log last summer and it worked great. But I found that after you run out of gas before the cut is finished and go to refill, I can only get the tank half full with the saw still in the log. There is a divider in the gas tank that prevents me from completely filling the tank. Should I drill some holes in it to let more gas into the bottom of the tank? Or is there any other tricks other than removing the saw from the log?

don't run out in cut it leans mixture and spikes the head temp relly dangrously hi , i run 066 mostly but if iam in the mood the lady 51 gets a tank or two , slower but torque and smooth she's sweet .

It's not just a tanks= divider that is a problem with the fuel tank opening on the top of the saw the openings transfers to the side when it's on a CSM so it cannot be filled unless some sort of specific elbow attachment is used. There used to be some on ebay but they disappeared although I notice there is one there now. These are made for concrete cutting saws - not sure if they would fit an 051.

I have an 051 and I've milled a ot of wood with it. I run a 42"bar which will get a 36" cut. the full 36" is a bit much for the 051 but it will do it. It is much better suited for 24-28". Keeping the chain sharp really helps gas mileage and taking the depth rakers down to .035 will let the saw take full advantage of the torque and get you through the log faster. Dirty filters will really bog the sw down and hurt your milling speed and mileage. The design of the saw will clog the filter much faster then on a modern design. I always cary a spare filter. You shoud also familiarize yourselt fir the carb and how to clean the filter screen and you might as well chesk.replace the intank gas filter. restriction of any of these will cause a loss of power and a hit to your mileage.

Running out of gas in the cut is part of the hassle/fun of milling with a chainsaw. I have milled some large logs where I had to fill up twice in the midle of the log, and you are right you don't get a full tank.

One thing that will help is to get the bigger tank for your saw. the small tank holds .9L and the big tank holds 1.2L that is nearly a 1/3 of a liter differeance and makes a huge difference, I have one of each and with the bigger tank I can often make it through a cut where as with the smaller tank I will run out of fuel.

Aux tank

I run a 075 and run an auxiliary gas tank. I bungee cord the tank to CSM and run a fuel line from the tank to the saw's carb.
I will post a better pic when I take one. Have a blessed day.

Way to go keeping that ol" girl workin for her supper. I use my 051AVE when needed. An aux. fuel tank would be the way to go. Just get a extre gas cap and drill a hole in it for a fuel line to run into your saw's tank. Also switch the air filter to a TS 510 cut-off saw setup.
