Anyone running a side dump chip truck? I'm converting over a truck I have with a landscape body to a chip truck. Really thinking about a side dump so I don't have to unhook the chipper every time. Curious if their are more drawbacks that I might not see.

Here's what I see, feel free to add to it...
Pros-
no unhooking chipper = saving time
I can use a shorter stroke hydraulic cylinder = cheaper
Cons-
Will stuff dump far enough away from the side of the truck?
I'd have to build a sub frame instead of just hinged off the truck frame = no big deal
Extra fabricating for the side door(s). Thinking I would hinge one big door at the top and let the bottom swing out and pin in place?

I could see getting bogged down in chips pretty easy. There might be a reason no one uses side dumps on trucks. Although it does sound like an awesome idea.

I used a chrysteel contractors box on a f-550 that had a lever that you could throw to switch from side dump to rear dump that was pretty neat. I never paid any attention to how the mechanism worked though. Maybe something like that would be worth looking in to?

ever try and roll logs off the side of a trailer. and they get jammed up against the tires?

I think you would have the same problem here with chips.

Might work with a couple yards of soil, rock, but not 10-15 yards of chips in a box..........

Yeah that's my only concern. I'm not planning on a real tall box as its a underpowered diesel Fuso. And the bed is already pretty narrow. Thinking it might work if the sides folded down with chain stops, but that also makes my pile height lower. Don't really want to find out it won't work the hard way. Thanks for everyone's input.

There was a guy on here a few years ago who had built a trailer with a side tipping chip box and a permanently mounted chipper on the same trailer. There was also room next to his chipper for his mini (or was it a stump grinder - cant remember). Holmen Tree in The Pas, Manitoba.

Finally found it. The fellow's name was Holmen Tree. Unfortunately the pictures on the thread were lost when the site was hacked.

But I did find the pics on The Tree H ou s e. Search for Holmen Tree, January 2011.

Thanks for taking the time to find that! Can't seem to bring it up on my phone, I'll give it a go on the computer when I get chance. Sounds interesting.

Only two ways to find out...
Yep
Option 1: build it and find out how well it does or doesn't work
Option 2: find someone who built one that works great and copy it.

I like option 2. After seeing how well landscape body trucks sell around here I might just sell it and buy a 12' or 14' one ton dump. Rather than spending money on something that will de-value the truck. Humm....

classictruckman on tree buzz got this truck made up last year

Thanks! And that's a great looking setup you have as well.

Actually looking to get rid of it...all except the platform. I only had the truck for a year, and I just replaced the tranny...hauling to much weight I think. Going to do the same setup with an international 4300.

Just curious how much are you looking to get for it? I don't mind being under powered, its fairly flat around here and I love the fuel economy.
Trans went in my Fuso as well, got lucky I found a used one on Craigslist for $50.

It is an 2005 Isuzu Nqr (17,000 gvw), deisel, automatic. I got it last year as a cab and chassis, and put around 7, 000 miles on it (97, 000 now almost). Just put 6 grand into it for inspection and remanufactued tranny. Paid $24,000 for it, and would like to get around that back out of it. Forestry body goes with it. It is in decent shape, couple rust areas, just replaced the floor last year too. But I box does need replacing

I am keeping platform.

I'm only a part timer so I'm not quite ready to spend that much. At the moment (which seems to constantly change) I'm thinking I'll sell my Fuso and go pick up a clean old idi or 7.3 powerstroke Ford from down south. I always go vehicle shopping anytime I head south to visit relatives. Had enough of even fairly newer stuff around here being rusted out.
