Check out my arbor press(kind of). I made it today and it only cost 5 dollars. Works great so far for pressings out bearings and crankshafts.

Picture of whole rig.

Picture of side(has 15 screws on each side up top(just in case)

Picture of jack(got for free). Using that screwdriver as a handle for now. Need to get a piece of pipe.

Cut out for when the crankshaft decides to pull free

Picture of the bottom(one board with 5 screws in each side). It took 1 2x6x8 which was $3 something. I had a couple 3.5 and some 3 inch screws sitting around. Assembled it this afternoon and pressed two crankshafts and two bearings so far. Tell me what you think(or if pictures are too big). Evan

It will work.. but be careful - hard to get a "feel" for what are doing and real easy to break things.

There is only one problem with your design - all that wood and screws on the top is not required -the box is only as strong as the single row of screws on the bottom board!

Yep, that's definitely an undersight in the design

If the top and bottom supports were turned 90 degrees the press would be much stronger. Kind of like how they build a header.

Good thinking though. Lots of people are afraid to tackle a job because they lack special tools. I never let that stop me.

1/2 inch or 5/8 threaded rod, top to bottom. 4 pieces.. that's what I'd use... but, if you don't have it, the $5 budget is blown.

Hey Junky - we're not pick'in on you - just good to have something to "improve" on AS:D

Headers are meant to hold a load from above, his press will load the top
and bottom equally.

Could add another 2X4 to the bottom.........If their is clearance for the jack.

Thanks for the advice but I think I need the three boards. If I had made the big hole for the crankshaft to go into it would've surely busted on first try. Maybe could've got by with one. Seems to be working okay so far. I went and got a 7/8 piece of dowel cut it to a foot length and works pretty good as the handle for the bottle jack. If it fails on me thats ok too(I wear safety glasses just incase). I only need it to last until about middle of July. I'm getting a friends used arc welder then and I'm gonna try to weld up a frame for it. Thanks for advice. Evan

I was going to say make it out of steal then I read further! I guess I am spoiled having both mig and Arc wielder and access to a machine shop.I hope it will last that long but it should if your not using it often.
