I was driving through a town today and noticed something strange. This particular town has a lawn in the middle of the two lanes of roadway. There are a bunch of trees of different sizes and species in there as well. As I am driving through, I see that many of the trees have what appears to be a 1/2", white, synthetic rope wrapped around them like a coil for roughly 5' or so going up the trunks. I did what I had to, and then drove back through that same area. On my return trip I noticed a sign which said something to the effect of "public art project." I am just curious if any of you guys have ever seen art of this form before, and what it entails, or just what it has to do with anything. I would assume that the ropes are going to have something applied to them in the following days? weeks?

It's my understanding that a (non-freeway) roadway with a center strip containing plant life is called a boulevard.

Were the trees newly planted, by any chance?

Tell us more about the other story. :-)

Glen, yeah, you are right about the name for the area... I just couldn't think of it at this time. So... thanks for that one. I would guess the area is about 30' or so wide?

As far as tree size... well, when I drove by this afternoon they hadn't quite covered all of the trees. None of them were small by species standards. There is a good sized sycamore which was covered, and I would assume that they are going to cover this MONSTER red oak at some point or another. If I had to venture a guess, nothing that was covered has been planted within the last 10 - 15 years.

About the other story, there is nothing to tell which would be of any interest.

I've always wanted to paint an entire tree, as an artistic statement. I'm thinking a bright red live oak, to contrast with the green. Or, maybe white.

While I was out just now on a new and even more strange adventure I thought of a better way to describe the rope, and the way in which it was put on the trees. If any of you guys have ever seen the original kick boxer with van damm... at the end there when they put the rope around his hands... that's how this rope looked on the trees, the ropes looked much alike as well, except of course for the whole glass deal.

nOt a van damme fan, but it sounds like the coiled rope may be the start of holiday decoration?

Not a van damme fan, but it sounds like the coiled rope may be the start of holiday decoration? look to see if lights will be attached next/

A great many stupid things pass for "Art". If it looks nice enjoy it. If it looks ridiculous ignore it. I am a highly skilled art critic and understand how to analyze the deep meanings represented by modern art. (If it looks like crap it probably is crap. If it looks like crap but it isn't crap then the artist is an idiot.)

I thought about painting a tree camouflage once -- but then it occurred to me -- ain't they that color anyway?

One of my favorite art forms is style called Eco-Art, Earth Art, or Environmental Art. I won't go in to details, and I'm not sure that what you are mentioning is this type of art, but I've studied it a bit and find that it can be a powerful form of artful communication. For more, you might want to google names like Walter deMaria, Micheal Heitzer (or Heizer), Ana Mendieta, Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, the eccentric couple Christo & Jeanne Claude, and the finally Andy Goldsworthy. If you look up only one of these, do Andy Goldsworthy, whose impermanent/ephemeral pieces often include various parts of trees. Here's a great example.

I snapped a few pics today of what has been done so far. They all look pretty much the same at this time. I will take more pics in the future if they do more work.

I bet THAT mirror is from a high-performance sports car instead of a Dodge van. :D

Like I was saying on the phone, we work for a family that had their trees wrapped with multi-colored ribbons for an art effect that they kept up for several years.

That's actually the latest in cutting edge arboriculture technology. Its designed to protect the trunks from damage due to car doors, children, vandals, animals, etc. The heavy duty version is a high density polymer that supposedly will withstand a thirty-mile-per-hour vehicle impact. They're being test-marketed in limited areas under the name of "tree huggers."

Here is the rest of the car.:D

That sounded really good. Looks fake in retrospect. Do you have a side career in false advertising? Do you really live in FL? Does your company even clear $150 a year?
