I have been climbing off and on for 16 years. I am not the best climber out there due to my size. I need to climb about 3 or 4 times a year. I still use the old tried and true taut-line method. I was wondering if there are any of the ascenders that are used in place of the taut line hitch. I see a lot of the are used for foot lock and that i am not so good at.
Thanks for the imput

You can get a petzl hand and foot ascender. I have both and once setup and actually ascending can be easy as pie to get up to where you need.

here is a link to many different kinds.

I found though it to be a pain to use on the job and having to rely on 1 or 2 more pieces of equipment to be to much trouble. The fact that you already use the good old taut line method will keep you out of trouble when learning to use the hand/foot ascenders "in case you drop it by accident"

when just having a fun rec climb i personally love using the french prusik/ valdotain tresse split tail.

I use the Mar-Bars several times a week. They look kinda pricey, but the pullup position you use is easy on the body.

I'm 6'9", 250# and climb regularly.

One thing I've found with foot ascenders is that they do not self tail for the first 5-10 ft. PITA.

I gave up and foot lock all the time now, except on very long pitches where I break out the foot unit.

I have the mars bars upper and lower. Is not as tiring if you spike your way all the way up for removal.Good for pruning too, tiring some but with throw ball you can really save alot of wear and tear on your knees and hips.Definitely worth it.

250 pounds? c,mon john, I have seen you eat. and had to pay for it.
(well worth it, I must add)

heck, you use a whole bottle of hot sauce on your eggs. all 12 of 'em.

sasquatch on steroids. 550, 600 lbs, easy. :jawdrop:

Kong double ascender for the hands, mar bar for the feet. best combo I've found.

hmm, there is one here of me stepping out of a bucket, and another of me leaning against my old truck. Cannot seem to find them on the hard drive.

Meesh-el had the latter on her site, but that was years ago.

The Petzl id might be what you're looking for.

+ 1 treeslayer my lift is 56 ft working height with john in it was 70ft + he is as tall as an oak.I think wis dnr comes out to measure him once a year just like the oak they did recently to see if it was still the tallest.:greenchainsaw: the mar bar system is the way to go very fast you can use 2 lines or single yiu can hang out holding the bar gives you stability.
