I got a friend that as an ash log thats been down for 2 yrs bark is off has some bore holes in it but I dont know how deep the log is 26" around by about 10' long is it worth spending the money on a chance its good or is it to late and its just firewood now I think I can get it for free what do you guys think I dont own a mill but there is a guy pretty close thats very reasonable I had 52bdft of walnut done for 30 bucks so is it worth the chance or not

thanks Todd

sure. i'd say that there's still plenty of nice lumber in that log, it just has more "character" than if it were fresh sawn. if your not spending an arm and a leg i say go for it!
also post pics.

Thats been sitting a little to long for me and would go in the firewood pile. Course I sell about 15 cords of ash a year.
But it depends on what your going to do with it. It would make great trailer bed planks for example. It just depends on what you plan for the wood.

I had some ash setting for about nine months before getting it milled. Bore holes went in about 3". Not a lot of good wood and the heart is darker. IMO, you have some nice firewood there.

I did an Ash tree for a friend and it was on concrete for a year. By the time we milled it, it was full of boring bees. Didn't get much usable wood from it. You'll know if you have usable wood or firewood once you opened it up.

That's exactly what I did with a 2 year old white oak log I had...:msp_thumbup:

For what it's worth. I have milled a few huge ash logs that had been down for about 24 months. Their was some nice lumber, but ash rots quickly so expect some waste.

If the cost reasonable it's always worth a shot I say. Like an old basketball coach once told me "Can't score if you don't shoot"

I agree, i ALWAYS see what's in the log, before i decide!
