Ash or Poplar

I'm terrible at identifying these. Would appreciate help!

And you'd know when you cut into it. Your saw would race thru the soft poplar. Ash is harder stuff.

Another identifier to help you know ash in the winter woods--look at the twigs and buds. Fat twigs, with an interesting feature to the buds. Look beneath the bud for the "camel face."

The smooth bark of the Poplar tops has a green color to it.

Also, poplar has a two tone color looking at the end of the log most of the time

When freshly cut, most poplar trees will have a greenish center, Ash will be salmon color, or now with it all being dead it will be light tan.
