Someone told me I could control weeds and grass in my Asparagus bed by spreading ice cream salt on the ground. Has anyone used this method? How much salt is used? Why doesn't it kill the Asparagus? I sure don't want to kill my bed as it was started by mother back in the 60's we would use sawdust to mulch, but I no longer have a source handy. Thanks

Common table salt once was used to control weeds in asparagus. Specialists no longer recommend this practice. Although asparagus is more tolerant of high salt levels in the soil than most plants, the sodium in table salt can destroy the soil structure. Also, this usually only eliminates annual weeds that come up from seed each year.
