I purchased an old Asplundh 4 cylinder chipper (the guy I bought it from told me it was a 1974). Anyway I need to get an exhaust manifold for this thing. Can anyone help me with where to get one or even what type engine (if something special) is in this thing. I am mechanical but I don't really know the first thing about types of engines, etc.. Also what is that big oil type filter outside on the body? and can it be replaced with something else? Also if anyone has a manual could they please send it to [email protected]. I do have one but it is missing some things. Thanks.

I'm sorry

Check with Altec, they own the rights to Asplundh Mfg.,or look on Asplundh's website. On the front page there's a small link towards the bottom to info on Asplundh mfg equipment.

As far as the large oil filter thing..dumb question, but it's not an oil bath air cleaner? Is it?

Good luck

I know the one that I have is driven by a Ford straight six cylinder engine and the manifold on it is cracked as well. Salvage yards should have some.

The big oil type thing on the outside of the body could be a dry air filter.

I think that it is an oil bath cleaner as I sort of remember the guy telling me that. I was wondering if I could put a filter typre air cleaner on it. Anyway I couldn't really find any info on altecs site. I am assuming this is a common ford 4 cyl. from 1974. Is there different kinds? Is there a litre size?

Thats the same engine as Ford tractors used, might try Ford tractor dealer. We have a dealer here in Maine that can get all kinds of old ford tractor parts.

Sorry This Is The Best I Can Do I Would Swear That I Had The Number To This Place Called Timmermans In Nj That I Ordered Parts From But For The Life Of Me I Can't Find It Sorry I Hope This Helps To Get You Started Good Luck Sal

so far no luck. I dont think an auto place would have something like this as this exhaust and intake manifold are one piece and the carb is sort of different looking.

You probably got the old style up draft and a ford 800 tractor should
interchange what tractor did you look at? You could also have it changed
over to a six banger with some modifications.

Is the carborater a zenith? The oil bath can be changed but
there is no way in hel? I would change it they are the best
filters made for dusty conditions. Why do you want to change it?
Just loosen the clamp and separate the bowl from the filter
top and clean it out and put in new oil to fill level unless you
chip on hilly terrain like where I live then fill it less but they will
last forever!

I was just looking at some tractor places now but didn't even know waht model to ask for. So you say it could be a ford 800. Is there any way I could find this out ? The exhaust and intake are definately one piece. How could I make a six if it is only a four??? Also I was just looking to replace the oil bath since it is banged up and leaky. I am trying to restore this thing so it looks presentable since it is a little banged up. Thanks

My dad had a few asplundh 4 cylinder chippers that were powered by a White brand industrial engine. Exhaust pipes were directed to the bottom of the engine.

Actually if you look very careful you should see that they bolt together
and are in fact two pieces! I may be wrong but I am fairly sure they
bolt together by recessed bolts under the carb. I have a 800 ford tractor
in my yard it is a four cylinder 172 ci with a zenith carb! The oil bath is
banged up too bad to repair? If so you could probably substitute a Koler
like on the newer stumpers or a tractor which some are oil bath!

Yeah i didn't take it off yet but it did look like one piece (very rusty). I will take it off tonight. Anyway the carb is very old looking, it has a small clear glass bowl that holds fuel before it goes to carb. What is this?

Oh yeah this exhaust comes out the top on the opposite end of the motor, which means it comes up at one end and then shoots over to the other and then up and out the top.

The bowl is supply and sediment trap and my 800 is identical
to what you are saying! The exhaust is flat meaning no donut
where it comes out top right?

Yes it is the 800. I just found a tractor place near me that has one for $155. The pic of the manifold is exact! Thanks for all your help guys!!!!!!!!!

You need to find a farm store, like a TSC or something in your area and just ask about a good old-tractor mechanic. If you get lucky you will find someone who can tell you quite a bit about that motor, where to get parts, and how to fix it. If I remember right, the governor was one of the expensive things to fix on those motors.
