I just got back and check this out..... a Makita 6401 with new piston and ring, 4 new Carlton chains, and a set of new chaps for.........$195 out of pocket!
I have pics but don't know how to post them.
The actual price was $205 before tax but HD sent me a $25 gift card earlier for buying a tablesaw. They then sent us a $35 gift card because the $25 one wouldn't work for some people. Well I had already used mine and it worked. So I used their own money to buy this saw.
:blob2: I pulled the muffler and I think I actually need to break this saw in!
The only damage I see is I think the handle mounting bolt may be tweaked a little.

sweet. i've had plenty of the blue dolmars in tha last year. They make great saws and for another 200 bucks or so, you can have a strong 7900. Congrats

What other manufacturers bars fit on here?

The Dolmars (and therefore Makitas) use a large Husqvarna-style bar. So anything that fits the larger Husqvarnas will fit your Makita. I happen to think that the orange GB Titaniums look best with Makitas, being that orange and blue are complimentary colors and all.

That said, since you've got Stihl products already, I would advise that you do the same thing that I would do if I was starting all over: Get yourself a bar adapter so you can run your Stihl bars. Cannon makes them and I'd assume that they are pretty cheap. That way you only have to keep one type of bar and can share between your 361 and 6401 (and 028 if it is running 3/8"). The drive link count will be the same for 16" and 20" bars, too.

Thanks for the great info guys.
I need help with the factory stock carb settings now. Lightly seat and then how many out on the low side?

Yup, factory Dolmar parts. Piston and cylinder are $191 retail and the base gasket is about 2 bucks. Everything else is the same. Well worth the added money if you use the saw for big wood.

one turn out on both the low and high will get you close. You will have to fine tune it some, depending on elavation and temp/humidity, but will get you close. Set the top end just shy of 13.5K. 13,500 is where the limiter kicks in, so set it just below the limiter to keep it from going lean on you.

My 361 responded very well to a muffler mod and was wondering if this 6401 will do the same? Would the mod for the 64cc saw work on the 79cc version?
Also I believe I felt some limiter caps on the carb adjustments.... am I right and how do you remove them?

Sorry for all of the questions guys but I am in a hurry....... I gotta go look at an 084!:jawdrop:
