Got a chance to pickup a 1890, it's got almost 2k for hours. It's an 06 so for that age it's in great shape, always stored in garage. It's got a Cat 140 hp tier 2 motor in it. I've heard both good and bad about Cats but never owned one. Guy wants 26k for it. Are there any known issues with Cats of that age ? Any info good or bad would really help. Thanks

I would check for engine blowby. Remove the oil fill cap while it's running and hold a white paper towel just above the opening. Oil on the towel means that there's oil by passing the rings. In 1998 Cat purchased Perkins engines. Anything below a 250hp engine is a Perkins engine even though it's marked Cat. You don't get a true Cat engine until you go over 250hp. Cat is higher in price when it comes for replacement parts than Perkins. You won't be able to take this machine to a Perkins dealer as the software is different. Many people are looking for tier II engines right now and the price for the chipper isn't bad at all. Make sure the auto-feed works as well.

Hope this helps!

We have an 06 1590 with the same 140 cat engine. Has about 3500 hours on it. Never had any problems with the motor. As Dave said above, check the auto feed, ours has always had problems, especially the programmable tach that controls it.

Gotcha, no blowby and started as it should from a cold start. What kind of tach issues ? Have you had to replace the tach ? Any issues with the oil leaks or seals ? This one does not have a winch which is always sweet but it's also one more thing somebody can screw up.

Yes, had to replace the tach, to program the high and low rpm values for the auto feed, was about $ 400 or 500. No issues with the motor whatsoever, still runs strong. I highly recommend having a winch installed, unless your going to have a loader on site to feed the chipper all the time. Have you run a chipper with a winch on it before? Definitely worth the investment for the amount of production increase.

No never owned a chipper with a winch option, we've loaded with our little boxer when it was convenient. Pickin the chipper up next week, goin to see if we can build a winch or buy one, either way it's gonna be an increase in productivity.

Nice, let us know how it works out for you. Also, the winch can pull brush/logs up hills that a loader can't. It's great to have.
