I have acquired about 5 gallons of FREE 10W motor oil. It is still in quarts and I wondered if I could run this in my saw without hurting the chain or bar. It is not that I am desparate to use it. I do have a wood splitter that could use a quart every couple of months, but that will take years to use it up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That should be several lifetimes worth of household/machine oil. If you want to operate things wnen it is really cold then it would be okay bar oil. Really 10 wt is sort of frustrating. It is oil. It just isn't the right oil for most applications. :(

Unless this is made to be a joke, hmm,it doesn't make bad hydraulic oil,for certain applications. Now let me see,bar oil, hmm, bonfire, maybe, puzzeling .

Thinning Bar Oil.

I use a 10w30 motor oil to thin the regular bar oil, mixed just enough so that it pours easily. So far it's worked for me. Doing the same with the 10w oil would also work. As Scottr says why couldn't it be used, it would have more lubricating value than fuel oil or kerosene and as Crofter says, it would smell a lot better. Talk later. Lewis.

I agree that it could thin bar oil with success however 5 gallons is nearly a life supply of bar oil thinner. Unless you dont mind it being around

Hello bama:

Hi bama, just keep the cardboard oil containers off the floor and away from moisture, Keep them dry. I have some left over qts of oil that I've had since 1989, that I use just for oil cans, etc. They sit will off the floor in my garage in a dry area and the cardboard hasn't deteriorated as yet, but I'm not handleing them everyday either. If your afraid of them leaking get a clean plastic pail with a decent snap on lid with a pour spout and pour the oil into that. Just a suggestion. Take care. Lewis.
