Hello fellow saw enthusiasts.
I was sharpening a friends chain the other day and we talked about the wonders of the safety chains.I told him my opinion about them and we let it go at that. My question is, What is the difference between a safety coded bar(green dot) and a standard bar (yellow dot).I suspect that the safety bar may have less arc, compared to a standard one.An I correct in my assumption? Ken

I believe the difference between the Stihl green dot safety bars, and the yellow dot bars is the radius of the sprocket tip and the curvature of the body/rails of the bar. Safety bars tend to have smaller radius sprocket tips. With a smaller sprocket tip radius there's less surface area to create severe kickback. Standard non safety bars tend to have a slightly larger sprocket nose radius.

The only other difference I can think of is the body of the Stihl green dot bars are laminated w/non replaceable sprocket tip. Whereas the yellow dot bars are solid w/replacable sprocket tip.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Nick

The differense is the nose radius, including the number of teeth on the nose sprocket. "Safety" bars have less kickback potensial, and doesn't bore-cut as well as the standard bars. It doesn't matter for crosscutting.

The laminated vs solid/repacable tip thing has nothing to do with it......

Yes, for the same bar type and length, the noise is SLIGHTLY different. It's so small a difference it's a wonder it makes any difference at all.. but...

The big difference is also that the "green" bars are tested with specific "green chain combinations to comply with ANSI kickback standards, and the yellow bars/chains are not.
