Where is a good place to get a big bore kit for an MS440? Will a big bore kit for a 460 work? I am planning to build my saw to run with a 66 so i would like to get a bb kit, but dont really know where to look.

I think that they do sell big bore kits in the catalog, but couldn't find anything on there website. Just OEM replacements. I eventually want to do the BB kit, port & polish, custon exhuast, 044 ignition and new carb.

Nope, it's on the website. Here it is!!

Dang. Oh well, when its finsihed it should be able to hopefully run with a 660. We'll see. How many CC's is 52mm? Thanks alot for all of your help.

Dont mean to burst your bubble,,,,

Just putting the BB Kit on your 460 wont make it cut with a good 660/066
because of the bigger bore but total displacement is not equaled because the Stroke on the BB saw is shorter,,, But if you get it woods ported it will get close,,,but in big wood with big bars the 066/660 will win everytime...... There is no substitute for displacement!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, it will not bolt up. It can be made to bolt up with proper machining, but then again the same could be said of almost anything.

The 460BB kit will bolt up on a 460, though.

Ooh, that stings. Did it leave a mark?

Sorry, Stihl4life, but your expectations are a bit high. 660s will largely be safe from a 440 without some big dollar mods, and then it will just get a 440 in the ballpark.

Why worry about it, the 440 is a great saw with a lot of power. Worry more about putting together a nice reliable 440, and less about making a giant killer. That's a saw that can stand on its own two feet without any excuses. Redo it if it needs repair, muffler mod it, tune it right, and go cut some wood. The only problems a 440 has are ones that someone gave it, or the fact that I don't have one...but that isn't the 440s problem either.

I was just being silly. I hope he didn't take it the wrong way.

You're right, the 440 is a great saw on its own. I'd skip the BB and just get a nice woodsport on an OEM p/c. It'll be quite lively that way.

Its stock right now, minus the ported muffler. Brand new saw actually. I have talked to two people, both loggers, that say the 440s do not benefit from just a port and polish alone. They say that the 044 ignition will help alot? Anyone else here that?

440s not benefiting from port & polish? I don't know what kind of two-bit port jobs they've done, but there's a ton to be gained from porting a 440. As to the ignition, the later saws have a better ignition map built in. There's no rev limiter, so I can't see a reason there to swap.

To the big bore vs stock question, go with a stock kit. Read this:

Treesling'r knows what's up. He's also at higher elevation, so it'd be a little different than Buckley.

My BB experiences

I would also reccomend reading the thread Tim suggested it is a really informative thread. I would advise that if the piston and cylinder are in good shape then by all means use them and you can make them run with a 066 up to about a 28" bar but not with the usualy homeowners garage tools. I will add that at the time that treeslinger posted his findings about the big bores the shop I work at where he did that saw opened the mufflers up the same amount that they do on the 044s and 046s. This last week we were contemplating whether or not to keep doing the big bore kits because we could get more out of the stock pis/cyl. We had gotten a saw back that the owner said wouldn't outcut a stock 046 it had a big bore kit and was modded. I tore the saw down but couldn't find anything to explain why. We opened up the front of the muffle with five half inch holes and ran it. A huge difference with an 8 pin sprocket it still had substantialy more torque than a stock 046. I think that because of the increases displacement you need more expansion volume because it's flowing more air becuase well its just plain bigger to put it simple. For example take a look at the difference in size between an 066s muffler and an 046s muffler the 066 is wider and deeper for more volume. So you either need to open it up more to release more exhaust or enlarge so the exhaust gasses have more room to expand. Sorry for the rant those are my thoughts on the subject.:jawdrop:
