I just want to share that I just purchased this Arborist Study guide and I'm starting to learn about the tree biology. So is anyone here really interested in this stuff? So far for me its stimulating my fat brain and I'm applying it as far as talking to some customers I'm starting to accumulate in this boring phoenix AZ area (by the way I'm going back east when summer comes back). Some day soon hopefully I will be a fully fledged a glorified Arborist/climber; then, I will be oh sooo cool! :cool2:

Well what a bunch of debbie downers! Good for you man your on the right path!

So many people think the tree biology doesn't apply to climbers, but the more you learn the more you'll understand what's going on with trees and how your actions climbing and trimming affects their health and well being, and hopefully you'll gain a new understanding and respect for the trees you work on. The same goes for soil science and other topics you may feel like you won't need. It's all connected. The fact you find it,"stimulating'', is a good start.

So far it’s helped me think about balancing out the removal of branches and other growth from the apical meristems and lateral meristems. If you remove too much of the small stuff inside the crown of the tree you may be forcing those outer branches to continue to shoot way out where they can become un-stable. If you take off the leads you are also encouraging lateral growth. I'm sure my costumers, that I get, will appreciate that I put a lot more thought into tree work. I should have even more jobs when I can talk like a tree doc. Thanks for your replies!

This has been discussed, certified means nothing anyone can pass a written exam however being qualified mean you know what you're doing.

I know some guys that are "certified" that shouldn't be allowed near a tree or a chain saw.

You guys do realize that the best way to become a great arborist fast would be to know the science before getting the experience right.

CJ, learn all you can on your way to the top, just keep in mind there are many things you will only be able to learn from experience and seasoned teachers. The science is however one of the best tools in your belt.

This opinion is general and could be about any trade that requires more than just dumb labor.

Good for you!
I am a confirmed tree geek also.
Becoming an arborist has at least two portions, one of which you are on your way to discovering, the other is the practical application of it which involves climbing and manouvering in trees and manipulating cutting tools...not just chainsaws...in a way so as to do least harm for maximum benefit for the tree.
Join the two and you'll be at the beginning of a creat career!

Good work. It's true that you're not going to learn everything you need to know from that book, but its a very good start. Chances are, some of the stuff you already "know" or have been taught is completely wrong, and the CA exam will set you on the right path. My experience is, many of the people who think the CA exam is a waste of time, simply are too lazy to take the test, can't pass it, or think they know it all already.

There may be forestry/ arboriculture groups in your area that have classes to help you along. We have the Missouri Community Forestry Council that does it a couple times a year.

Good luck.

True competence in this business takes many years. After a few years what you read in those books will be instinctive knowledge. Take my advice, get on a power company crew. The appearance of the work isn't so critical and you'll learn all you need to work the ropes like a real pro some day. Go get em!

I'm not quite certified yet guys. But I got a tree climbing competition coming up for the Charlotte nc area on the 13th and 14th. I'm Registered. to compete.

I know that I'm supposed to go through bunch of college smarty pants schooling, and rules and #### before I know how to sharpen and run a chainsaw , plus , ever have the type of mindset to naturally understand the multi-dimensional world that abounds in physics and interaction - via .. world of aerial tree work.

so here is your Arborsite underdog ####en you tube learner guy about to compete Mother ####ers! Drunk and tired of being overcome , but coming up in life . . cheers with beers in the tree .

Manipulation of auxin by careful pruning is a start, having a response mindset is priceless in our pruning plans.
