I have some real basic questions.

If I want to mill 8' long boards, should I cut the log longer? Like 9'?

I want to build a small solar kiln {I live in the desert} but the plans I've seen call for it to be 8' long. This doesn't compute for 8' lumber! How long is your solar kiln?

For a metal detector... Wand? Treasure hunter style? Other?

If I needed an 8' long board, I'd cut the log 8' 4" - 8' 6", then trim to exact length after drying and edging.

I usually mill at least 6" longer than final length.

It won't matter if you make it a ft or 2 longer

It doesn't matter. I use a want but I have seen treasure hunter style wands being used.
