hey guys, i have an 090av that has just been overhauled and wanting to do some slabbing with it, i have a GB 56inch bar and cant decide to buy a mill or make one, i have a lot of welding and fabricating experience and would like to make one but want to know what you all think and find out what are some different things that make the mills more user friendly, any of you guys with custom mills please post pictures! thanks

I believe in "get er' done". My MK III cost me about 4 hours of what my time was worth. And if you want to do some serious slabbing look at the Panther Pro's.

The best of course is to build your own - IF you have the time. Now if your tight on $$ and long on time, skills and materials BobL has some doozy big saw examples, with wheels and beverage holders. I'm waiting for him to build one with a built in winch, GPS, and hot tub :)

EDM!!! tha's a bit much for CSM. I'm trying like heck to get on at a local shop so equipped. Metalworking is my first love, but I've rarely had access to 'chine tools. I figger a job there would help.

Keep us informed...oh man, just imagining the custom felling spikes i'd have if only a waterjet was handy. SLAP ME...back to wood dust, not metal!!!

hahaha i have done a lot of tree work for nestle RND and i happen to know the guys in the shop real well, the best part is every thing is stainless i had them cut some me a few things out of inch plate and the used food grade stainless plate let me know if you guys have any drawings i can see if i can get some stuff cut for you.

I have made one out of 1 1/2 " square tube 45 on the corners that will hold half gallon of oil so no need for a separate oil tank . I just use a ball valve to regulate the drip from a hose on the bar . The uprites are 1" round counter sunk at 1 inch intervals with the 1/2 inch down the side . 36 " bar bolted to uprites it will cut 27 " and is easey to handle .

First of all, welcome to the group.

With your fab skills ans access to equipment you should be able to fabricate your own mill. Stainless steel is cool, but it will start getting heavy with a 56" bar and 090 attached. Try to make your mill from aluminum and keep it simple to start. You can always do modifications to the mill once you get started milling.

My footers have links to the build of my mill and mini-mill.

Have fun building.

thanks everyone, i was wondering if weight is a big problem with the mills, i know it will be heavy getting it to the log but i have a small asv loader i use if i have to go very far my question is weight a positive or negative once you have the mill on the log and start cutting? id assume if its heavy it will help the mill cut better if you have one end of the log up in the air but does it make much difference if the log is laying flat? positive of negative affect? thanks

I have a 36" mill I use with a 660. It's a bit heavy, but once it's on the log I never notice.

Mr. Malloff was quite fond of using a winch/pully system to draw the CSM through the log. BobL is a gravity feed guy. I'd try it flat a few times... nothing teaches like experience. YES it's going to be a handful getting in and out of the cut. NOTHING is as goofy as a chainsaw with a CSM attached to the bar. I'm just getting started. So much you can read, but doesn't sink in until you start making sidewise dust.

I'd go for a light mill and add weight to it so it will self feed.

haha seems like it it usually takes a week or two for the guys to help me out but i don't mind the wait when its free, i do tree favors for them but i don't mind helping any one out especially when they have such a nice shop at their finger tips!!!
